Poetry Slam Cuenca – There will be second round of this poetry recital el miércoles, 1/11 a las 19:00 on the terrace of the CCE. Enter at peotryslamcuenca@gmail.com. Your work must be original, not a recitation of another author’s work, it can’t be over 3 min, and it should be an expressive recitation and not a reading although you can use notes. <Doesn’t say anything about a language requirement so go for it if you write in English.>

Photo exhibit – There is a photo exhibit by Patricio Montaleza of internationally famous actors including Al Pacino, Michael Caine and Rachel Weisz, and Latin American and Ecuadorian actors who were photographed at various festivals wearing sombreros de paja de toquilla (Panama hats). <No Charlie Sheen? I guess someone figured he might not be the best representative of the “Panama hat brand.”>

Fotoclub Cuenca – The club is showing an exhibit called “RÍOS DE CUENCA” from 26/10 to 24/11 at the Museo de la Ciudad (Benigno Malo y Gran Colombia). The opening will be a las 19:00. <I’m assuming on the 26th although the date and the time were in two different paragraphs.>

Plan de Cultura – Baños was the first of the assemblies planned in the rural parishes of Cuenca to talk about the Cultural Plan 2030. Martes will be in the Biblioteca Municipal del Valle, and miércoles will be in the Biblioteca Mjunicipal de Sinincay. The goal of the assemblies is to get a long range vision and convert culture into an axis of development in the cantón. <Good for tourism – lots of stuff to see and do and buy.>

Film cycle – A film cycle continues on 25 & 26/10 a las 10:00 in the Sala de Conciertos in the CCE. The films are ¿Quién mató a la llamita blanca?” (Who killed the white little flame/llama?) and “Dí buen día a papá” (Say good morning to dad) <That’s what Google says, but I can’t figure out what dí means – if it’s from decir or from dar, and why can’t I find it in my book of 333 verbs.>

Titular – Incendio en fábrica (Fire in factory) – A huge plume of black smoke alerted the Servicio Integrado de Seguridad (SIS) EC 911 and they used surveillance cameras to confirm a fire in the building housing the “Clinker de Hormicreto” at the Graiman factory in the Industrial Park. The Fire Station two blocks away responded and called for maximum support. A total of 110 firefighters and 20 pump and tanker trucks were involved. The factory’s own fire fighters were fighting the blaze before the bomberos arrived. It took them 2 hours to get the fire under control and out.

Reina de los Barrios de Cuenca – The new Queen of the Barrios in Cuenca is Paula Maldonado. She was elected el sábado.

Buses – The debate about the Euro 5 technology buses continues. Intrans Ecuador, S.A., which imports the MAN and Volkswagen Trucks and Buses brands, responded to the doubts about the compatibility of the Euro 5 bus with locally available fuel. A representative said the buses are equipped with MAN D08 engines which were tested all over the country in each geographic zone and with the locally available fuel. These buses currently operate in Guayaquil and Loja without problems. The models are configured especially for the geography and available fuel. <Altitude specific buses? Are you old enough to remember driving cars with chokes?>

Reina de Cuenca – The Queen of Cuenca election will be este sábado a las 20:00 in the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz.

Fiesta en Mercado 3 de Noviembre – The 55 year old market will celebrate from 1-4/11. The main day of the fiesta is viernes, 3/11 and starts at 8:00 with a food festival with entertainers starting at 10:00. The artists will continue on the 4/11 which is also the Festival de la Yapa. For every purchase, you get a little extra. <Is that so very different from normal?>

Prostitution – Prostitutes are increasing in the streets around the Terminal Terrestre, the Nueve de Octubre and Diez de Agosto markets during the daytime, and around the Terminal Terrestre, along Huayna Cápac and around the Hospital Universitario Católico at night. Neighbors and businesses are complaining and the council is is talking about following up with hostals and hotels that allow prostitutes. The city also wants to relocated the “zona de tolerencia” (tolerence zone) which has gotten too small as Cuenca has grown. <It wouldn’t be the world’s oldest trade if the demand weren’t there.>
