If you plan your time around what’s happening in Cuenca’s creative community, then this column is for you. Published every Monday, What’s Happening Under the Domes highlights the exhibits, concerts, workshops and other not-to-be-missed artistic events scheduled for the coming week. We cannot guarantee a complete listing, but we’ll try our best to keep you informed.
If, in the Blue Grass State where I come from, the Run for the Roses marks the beginning of spring, then moving from Kentucky to Ecuador, where roses are the largest agriculture export, has eternalized that season for us. Arguably May is the most beautiful month in Kentucky, and the first Saturday of the month brings some of the things most memorable about spring in my state: red roses, big hats, and the “most exciting two minutes in sports.”
Thus, Kathy and I will celebrate our arrival in Cuenca six years ago in May with a blow-out Kentucky Derby party at idiomART, on Saturday, May 4, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Our party will feature: live music by Deb Davis; derby delicacies catered by Double D’s Delights; roses from EcuadorUSA Roses; and a cash bar with the best mint juleps anywhere between Appalachia and the Andes. We’ll offer a “Wagering Window” where you can bet on the event and a live broadcast of the race on two large screen televisions.
Tickets, $15 each, will be available at idiomART through May 1.
At idiomART, this week, you can also purchase Derby hats, handmade by Jolene Wilson-Glah, a three-time cancer survivor. Proceeds from sale of the hats will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Also, Ecuador—USA Roses will host a drawing at the event. The winner will be able to send a free bouquet of roses to a loved one in the US, just in time for Mothers’ Day.
idiomART is located at Presidente Córdova 1-77 between Manuel Vega and Miguel Angel Estrella (near Huayna Cápac), we are open on Monday through Friday, from 10 am to 3 pm.
We hope you’ll celebrate the Run for the Roses with us.
