Teatro – “El Publico” by Federico García Lorca will premier Wednesday a las 20:00 in the Pumapungo. Directed by Andrés Zambrano, the play has a cast of more than 30 actors. Cost: $7.00.

Concierto – There will be a concert of chamber music with the string ensemble of the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Universidad de Cuenca el sábado a las 15:00 in the quinta “Waylpampa, Gualdeleg” in the La Unión sector of Yunguilla. This concert, produced by Andrés Alban will feature pieces by Bach and Mozart and include a performance by a traditional dance company. Cost: $30.00 including a lunch box, $35.00 if you want to take a bus that leaves the plaza El Otorongo at 12:00. <Makes it real easy to get your dose of musical culture.> Make reservations with Andrés Alban at 098 167 7881. <As usual, be prepared to do this in Spanish – after all, you are in a Spanish speaking country.> There is space for 60 attendees.

Taller – There will be a photographic Taller de Experimentación “Cámara Sensorial” until viernes from 16-19:00 in the Casa de Artista (next to the arch over Avenida Loja). The workshop will cover techniques, formulas, and ways to manage the camera to capture more than just images of the moment, but to tell a story. <Like what Robert Bradley does, eh?>

Exposición – The show “Con la otra mano” (With the other hand) by artist Luigui Stornaiolo will open el jueves a las 19:30 in the Centro Cultural Búnker. Also el jueves a las 19:00 there will be a talk about the artist’s career in the Hotel Selina (formerly the Hotel Crespo) with writer Carlos Vásconez moderating.

Arte – The paintings of Olmedo Quimbita is showing at the Galería de la Alcaldía in tribute to his 30 year career as “el pintor de la luz” (the painter of light),

Exposición canina – There will be a dog event, “Exposición canina Internacional: Copa Prime Pet,” los próximos sábado, 10/11 y domingo, 11/11 in the Centro de Convenciones at the Mall del Río de 11-18:00. Proceeds will benefit Los amigos de Manolo, M.C.A. Movimiento Conciencia Animal Cuenca, Rescate Animal Cuenca and Asociación Protectora de Animales sin fines de Lucro. Cost: $1.50, kids free. El Cajas – There will be a special program Wednesday desde las 10:00 in the Centro de Interpretación La Toreadora to celebrate the declaration of the Cajas as a Parque Nacional 22 years ago.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Casa patrimonio es ahora centro para terapias (Historic house is now a therapy center) – The Casa Palacios Abad, next to the Plaza del Otorongo opened Tuesday. It is one of 14 historic homes the city is restoring and will function as a Centro Municipal Terapéutico for people with disabilities. It expects to serve 140 people over the age of 5 with physical and mental disabilities each month.

Venezuelan migrants – Of the 340,000 migrants who have entered Ecuador recently in “condiciones irregulares” (irregular conditions) 64,000 are children and adolescents. The ministries of Inclusión Económica y Social, Relaciones Exteriores y Movilidad Humana, and del Interior, along with Unicef are developing a protocol to provide attention and protection to these children, 6 of 10 of whom are arriving without the permission of their parents. The protocol will guarantee the rights of the children and put their interests first, including the right to family reunification and not separating families. <What concept – not tearing babies away from their parents and putting them in concentration camps somewhere far away from their families.> The number of Venezuelans entering Ecuador has risen from 2,000 to 5,000 daily with 54% from 18-35 years old, 22% from 36-55 years, and 3% older than 56. Many are in transit to other countries such as Perú. <And the US is planning to greet a caravan of about 7,000 refugees with twice as many soldiers. I think the fire went out on Lady Liberty’s torch about 2 years ago.>

Cocaine – The Dirección Nacional Antinarcóticos of the National Police seized 1.18 tons of cocaine in several operations in recent days and arrested 5 suspects. The drugs were seized in Pastaza, and Guayaquil with destinations to Belgium and Holland.

Airport – The Corporación Aeroportuaria de Cuenca has asked TAME to give up its authorization to the Cuenca-Guayaquil route. If this happens, it will open the way for airlines such as Aeroregional and Avioandes and others interested to provide service between Cuenca and Guayaquil. <One can only hope. Why would TAME want to keep a route that it says is unprofitable to fly and isn’t even flying? Like a dog guarding a salad it doesn’t want to eat – just keep.>

Tranvía – There is an ordinance which will be publicized this week to create a municipal business, Empresa Pública Municipal Tranvía de Cuenca EP, to run the Tranvia. There is currently a contract of almost $3.5 million with Metropolitano de Tenerife Sociedad Anónima for pre-operation and operation of the system for the first 3 years.

Jueces de paz (Judges of peace) <This is your civics lesson article for the day> – Gualaceo has 7 new volunteer, judges of peace, who can resolve cases involving less than 5 basic salaries (about $2,000) and involving small and common disputes such as performance on contracts, destruction of fences and obstructing drainage ditches. The judges need to be community members with a civic spirit and they serve for 2 years and can be re-elected.

Deportes –

Billiards – The V Ranking Provincial de Billar will start el miercoles a las 18:00 in the Cassa de Billar at the Complejo Deportivo Bolivariano. This qualifying round for the National competitions will run until el 9/11.
