A very unusual concert takes place this Wednesday, Dec. 8 at the Saladentro gallery, 4-78 Paseo 3 de Noviembre y Bajada Todos Santos. The current exhibition is the white-on-white paintings of Diego Jaramillo. As an accompaniment to these extraordinary and sublime works, Su Terry will be playing a rare Japanese flute called “shakuhachi.”
This is the very first shakuhachi concert ever in Ecuador! Accompanying Su will be young master percussionist Pedro Ortiz. They will shape a most inspiring aesthetic environment for you during this presentation: you will be surrounded by Diego Jaramillo’s white landscapes, and the ethereal sounds of shakuhachi with hand percussion instruments.
There are very few shakuhachi masters in the world, because of its difficulty. The instrument is said to have originated in Egypt, passing through China and India before achieving its legendary status in the Edo Period of Japan, where it was played by the Ronin—Samurai warriors who had lost their masters and were thus prohibited from carrying swords. They played for alms and meditation–as well as having the robust root end of the bamboo flute to use as a weapon, if needed!
The traditional repertoire of the Kinko shakuhachi school is comprised of 36 “honkyoku”, slow pieces for Zen meditation. But the haunting sound of the instrument has inspired a number of contemporary composers as well.
“The sound of the bamboo flute leads the mind directly into spiritual thought. Thus a single tone of the shakuhachi can sometimes bring one to the world of Nirvana.” —musicologist Fumio Koizumi
My name is Gustav Lehstmann and I am a geography student from Germany at the University of Hamburg. I am currently writing my bachelor thesis on the integration of retirees from the Global North in Cuenca, Ecuador. I came up with this idea because I did a year of voluntary service in Riobamba and visited Cuenca several times.
This survey is about the coexistence between Ecuadorian and foreign society in Cuenca. Its questions address various aspects of everyday life and aim to find out what type of integration is present. The questionnaire includes about 34 questions, varying slightly depending on your selected answers. Accordingly, the editing time is about 5-10 min.
In the context of my thesis, I chose this medium to survey people both because of the pandemic and moreover because I think that most foreigners are very well connected online.
The information obtained as a result of this survey will be treated confidentially and anonymously and used exclusively for the purpose of the Bachelor thesis. In order for the survey to be carried out successfully, it is important that the questionnaire is answered in complete form.
Thank you for participating!
