For expats to apply and receive their visas and cedulas, it is a requirement that you have health insurance.
The problem is that the IESS (public health insurance) and most private health insurance companies require that you have a visa/cedula to apply. Seems kind of a like a contradiction, doesn’t it?
We have negotiated a special, limited health insurance plan with one of the companies we work with that will allow our clients to contract a short, 3-month policy in order for you to acquire your visa/cedula.
The idea is that after your 3-month contract, you move to a public or another private health insurance provider for a long-term contract with much better coverage.
And YES, this short-term plan and the company is approved as one of the prepaid healthcare providers in Ecuador.
So let’s get started!

Contract law in Ecuador is quite different than what you are used to. And every situation is different. Just because your last landlord was a gem, doesn’t mean that your next one will be nearly as fair with you. Even though you treat your employees like family, it won’t matter if they drag you into court one day. Be prepared and get your rock-solid contract drawn up now, so that you won’t have any problems later. Recommendation for Daniela Cordero of Millennial Broker’s Cuenca Expat Insurance
We have been using the services of Daniela Cordero for over a year now and she has been a great help to us. We were new expats at the time and choosing medical insurance was confusing and daunting. Daniela provided us with a medical insurance recommendation with BMI Iqualas Medicas and explained very clearly what our options were and helped us every step of the way. As far as service, she has gone the extra mile, even bringing paperwork and refunds to our home at times. Her English is excellent, which is a big plus for us, as we are still learning to become fluent in Spanish.
BMI has been a good company for us as well. What influenced us in our choice was not being limited to a particular network of medical providers. Not being familiar with any of the doctors here, it was important to us to keep our options open. During our first year with them, we have been satisfied with the coverage and were happy that they paid some claims that we were not sure would be covered.
