Our amazing dogs at the FAAN shelter have told us they want a dating app to help them find a Forever home.
We know they are not only loving pups but a few of our dogs are tech-savvy and we need to limit their screen time.

While we don’t have a FAAN dating APP, we have created profiles for our wonderful doglets waiting for adoption.
Luisa is this week’s FAAN dog who wants to meet you.

If you are thinking of adopting or fostering, reach out to us and ask for an adoption application. Our FAAN volunteer matchmakers will work with you to make the perfect match.

From learning grammar first to trying to make progress by adding more vocabulary.
These are three things to avoid when learning a second language>
1) Don’t learn grammar first, learn the Spanish phonics first, but don’t get obsessed with them since that’s just the framework of the language.
2) Don’t add new vocabulary without linking them to new verbs. For example: money/ spend, charge, waste, etc.
Food/ cook, fry, freeze, etc.
3) Don’t use a translator to test your pronunciation (they are not intended for natives, so, you don’t want to sound like a robot, do you?). Ask YouTube help instead… “How to pronounce ‘desafortunadamente’ in Spanish.
Trying to master Spanish as a no head chicken? no way! try this better:

The IESS is an autonomous institution responsible for implementing mandatory general insurance. In other words, its main function is to protect the rights of Ecuadorian workers who are insured. The inclusion of voluntary affiliates, which includes expatriates, has allowed the general public to access healthcare services such as medicine, medical appointments, emergencies, laboratory tests, and surgeries. This opportunity has also been utilized by foreigners who chose to settle in Ecuador. They have been able to access low-cost healthcare services, but often lack the necessary understanding of how the IESS system works.
The current situation of the IESS is concerning, as it owes money to several external service providers. This lack of financial flow is affecting its affiliates, who have stopped receiving their monthly medications, specialist appointments, or are facing months-long waits for surgeries…Continue reading

In ancestral wisdom traditions, all illness, whether physical, emotional or psychological, stems from an illness of Spirit – a separation of the self from one’s true essence. In Andean shamanism, “limpias” – or energy cleanses – help restore a person’s energy body to its natural state, creating balance, healings and reestablishing the natural current of vital energy to the physical body.

With the help of a shaman, stronger interventions are possible. Shamans act as a liaison between the spiritual and physical worlds and can assist in a retrieval of soul loss, repairing psychic and energetic intrusions, discharging ancestral karma, and restoring a person’s human connection to the natural world.

This is the medicine before ‘medicine’.

Taita Ivan Navarro, an elder shaman from Chile with over 40 years of service in the healing arts, will be in Cuenca offering ancestral Andean limpias/energy healings for the next month.

Healing sessions are private, and may include the use of: smoke, tobacco, sweet/bitter plants, crystals, fire, or power plants.

Cost is $70.

Please send a message via email to book a session.

If interested in other services such as: sweat lodge/temazcal, private or group services for specific needs/occasions, power plant medicine ceremonies, or would like to join a local opportunity to experience ancestral healing first hand, please send a message via email for more information.

The Jazz Society of Ecuador’s 11th Anniversary Gala!

2023 Jazz Festival at the Jazz Society Café!

“Cuenca’s Jazz Renaissance: A decade of Jim Gala’s influence”

Eleven years ago, Jim Gala founded The Jazz Society of Ecuador and its performance venue, the Jazz Society Café in Cuenca. At that time, jazz was almost non-existent in Cuenca, and most of Ecuador.  Over the past decade, Jim’s dedication and passion for jazz, “America’s original artform”, has transformed Cuenca into a vibrant destination for jazz enthusiasts, Ecuadorian residents, and international tourists to attend.

Jim, a jazz pianist from New York, was soon joined by renowned saxophonist, Su Terry, and their performances and mentorship have not only elevated the local music scene but also inspired a new generation of young Ecuadorian jazz musicians. Cuenca’s first dedicated jazz club, the Jazz Society Cafe, has presented over a thousand live jazz events, and each performance has contributed to Cuenca’s cultural assets and international reputation.

As Cuenca’s jazz scene enters its 11th year, the Jazz Society Café remains a home base for jazz enthusiasts worldwide, and continues to present live jazz performances, ensuring that the magic of jazz pulses throughout Cuenca and all of Ecuador.

Come celebrate with us as The Jazz Society of Ecuador celebrates its 11th Anniversary! it’s clear that Jim Gala’s legacy is here to stay.  —Leonardo Duran.

Limited seating, so reserve a table now, and experience an evening of unforgettable music and delicious food! Dinner service from 6PM, Music at 7pm

This week we continue to thank the businesses who have joined with FAAN in our grassroots effort to not only build the most modern animal shelter in South America but to work with us in a strategic plan to transform animal welfare in Cuenca through prevention, education, and creating a culture of adoption.

JD’s donation of a brand-new recline raised more than $500 at the Gala FAAN-TASTICA auction for our immediate construction funds.

When you are looking for new or slightly used furnishings, home decor, or appliances JD’s is a FAAN favorite. Be sure to thank the team for helping us to make Cuenca known as the “The City that Cares” about animal welfare.

There is no more important time to donate to FAAN with your donation which will still doubled by our mystery donor as we enter a critical and emergency situation at the current shelter. Landslides at the upper shelter are prompting our building committee to rapidly design an innovative solution so we can move the dogs in danger first and sooner.

Reach out to us if you have experience in construction, building, and project management and or if you can make a year-end donation to the phase one emergency build.

We not only were gifted with a sampling of their wonderful cheeses from the farm in Cotacachi but also a collection of amazing sheepskin rugs that will benefit FAAN the LVO Project and the Indigenous Community of San Antonio del Punge.

Since we own two of them, (one on each side of the bed) we are a testimonial that your doglet and cat will also love to snuggle in these sheepskin fluffy clouds and they clean super easy with soap and water.
These amazing rugs, each one is a little different are $195 and arrangements can be made for pick-up in Cuenca

Genuine Sheepskin lasts many years as a high-quality rug and is often passed on or re-gifted – however, it is also totally biodegradable and far less harmful to the planet than synthetic faux sheepskin. The versatility of a sheepskin rug provides additional benefits.

Other Features:
– Verde Oveja original sheepskin Hypo-allergenic and water-repellent
– 100% genuine sheepskins originate on our Cotacachi farm, where the sheep are raised in open grazing fields while they develop soft insulating wool.

The final product is traditional sheepskin which offers decorative versatility while adding a natural softness to any space.

…it sure makes your life in Ecuador easier to live.
Would it be easier if Spanish native speakers spoke slower?
Spanish speakers from the Ecuadorian Coast speak faster than Andean speakers.
But the real reason why you perceive Spanish like that is because
>Spanish is a syllable timed language while English is a stress timed language (this is what makes you sound foreign while speaking Spanish).

The more you imitate the rhythm, the more you will sound like native Spanish native speakers.
The more you become familiar with its rhythm, the more you will feel confident to speak.
How do you gain confidence? Learning and practicing in a proper way.

Why is understanding native Spanish speakers a challenge?
Because we don’t catch the language word by word! We catch the language in chunks.
>I already master Spanish tenses, I did my best, so, why is it so hard to understand when a native talks to me?
Because native speakers of a language are set up to send signals, communicative cues for other native speakers, not for language learners.
> So, what to do?
You have to learn how to listen to native Spanish speakers.
Wanting to work on your Spanish spoken skills?

A deep tissue massage is a type of massage that aims to invigorate and heal a person’s muscles and connective tissue.

Deep tissue massage works on specific areas of muscle tension in the body. Stress, bad postures, or intensive physical activity can cause contracted muscles; a good massage is the best way to treat this.

The main benefit of a deep tissue massage is that it can help relieve pain caused by stressed and strained muscles—the massage focus on targeting specific muscles and connective tissue.

A deep tissue massage can also help improve muscle function, which can be handy for athletes and anyone physically active. In addition, deep tissue massage treats the muscles as an entire unit; it can help improve how a person moves by improving their posture and alignment. It can help people with back pain, recent injuries, and sports-related injuries.

During the massage, I focus on your physical and emotional well-being, helping you to reach a deep level of relaxation that has long-term benefits even when the treatment is over.

This massage is highly recommended for people who need to restore their body balance due to nervous system disorders and different types of tension, including contracted muscles, stiffness, or aches and pains.

Schedule your in-home massage on the day and time that suits you best.

Massage costs USD 45 + $5.00 transportation fee
