Cuenca celebrates International Day of Light

May 16, 2018

Cuenca joins cities in 83 countries tonight to celebrate the United Nations International Day of Light.

The entrances to the cathedral were illuminated in 2017.

As part of the celebration, computer-animated lighting will be projected on several public buildings around Parque Calderon, including the municipal building and Salón de la Ciudad.

“It will be an exciting event since the lighting is manipulated by artists using special effects and brilliant colors that interact with the public performances,” says Xavier Guambana, spokesman for Iluminar Municipal Foundation. “Many Cuencanos have witnessed these displays before and can appreciate the high level of artistry involved.”

The show begins at 8 p.m. Wednesday and will continue until 11 p.m., Guambana says.

The celebration reignites Friday night at 7 p.m. at nearby Santo Domingo Plaza, where the award-winning Ecuadorian movie “En el nombre de la hija” will be projected.
