Otras cosas –

Titular – 45 días para captar el voto ciudadano (45 days to capture the citizen vote) – Starting today, 278 political organizations are presenting their candidates for mayors, councils, prefects and vice-prefects, and members of the rural Parish Councils. Nationally, there are 5,668 offices to fill. Also to be elected are the members of the Consejo de Participación Ciudadana y Control Social (Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control).

Bus accident – Another bus accident has claimed the lives of 5 and injured 23. Among the dead is a man from the US. The Cooperativa Súper Taxis Cuenca bus from Cuenca to Quito overturned on a curve around 1:30 la “madrugada del lunes” (early Mon. morning) at the entrance to the La Moya community in Alausí.

Tranvía arbitration – There was a “Mid-Stream Conference” yesterday and today in which the City of Cuenca and the Consorcio CCRC por el Proyecto Tranvía each had 2 hours to present its case. When the city terminated the contract on the grounds the contractor had abandoned the work, it acquired the right to establish the physical progress of the work, the financial and accounting settlement; execute the guarantees of faithful compliance (completion bonds?); and demand compensation for damages and losses.

Another tranvía hearing into the grounds for the disagreement will be in Santiago de Chile the first half of julio. The City’s position is that since the CCRC did not contest the termination of the contract either judicially or administatively, the termination stands and there is nothing to discuss.

Voto 2019 por alcalde (mayor) – El Mercurio will cover the 13 mayoral candidates and their proposals in a daily article in order of the “list” of their political parties. The first is Juan Campoverde Durán, the candidate for the Partido Sociedad Patrótica (PSP-Lista 3). He would:

Audit the Tranvía contracts and swap a debt Cuenca owes to France for financing part of the Tranvía to an environmental remediation plan for the Macizo del Cajas and reforestation.

Have the rest of the obligations of the Tranvía assumed by the federal government. Buy electric buses, have the municipality instead of the CTC members provide bus service for 25¢ and 12¢ fares, and go back to cash fares.

Build interchanges and overpasses at 3 Puentes and the Parque Industrial for example, to relieve traffic congestion.

Create a new municipal police and change how EMOV agents (traffic cops) operate so they would no longer issue tickets and fines, but do preventive labor. <And you thought they already did nothing – wait until this preventive labor stuff starts and watch the drivers get even crazier.>

Close the Río Blanco and Quisacocha mines.

In a nutshell, he would: Have vehicle inspections done by authorized private stations for $10, Cancel the Tasa Solidaria; rebuild the Mercado Arenal with 3 floors; rebuild a new 40,000 seat stadium paid for by renting out commercial spaces and parking in a new underground lot under the stadium; relocate the airport to somewhere between Déleg and Azogues in the Jatumpamba sector; and establish an agreement with the meat growers for the construction of the new slaughterhouse and livestock market.

<Let me know if this is a regular article you want to see. I would hope that those of you eligible to vote know enough Spanish to read your own election material. If not, how were you going to to decide who and what to vote for?>

Premio Sprudgie – Hacienda La Papaya in Saraguro, Loja has won a Sprudgie Award for its coffee in the “Productor de Café Destacado” (Outstanding Coffee Producer) cagegory. This was the first time an Ecuadorian producer of specialty coffee has entered won. Sprudge is a reknowned coffee blog.

Contracts – Pablo Chambers, a member of a”veeduría ciudadana” (citizens’ oversight group?), informed the CPCCS-T that Ex. Pres. Correa knew that contracts his brother received had damaged the State by $657 million. He was the investigator and asked for a hearing to make the documents public.

And that’s all for today so Hasta ? –
