Hola, Todos –
Actividades –

Del cuerpo del periodico –

La Ruta del Cuy – Ricuarte Parish is developing “The Cuy Route” as a tourist attraction in which restaurants, producers, and distributors as well as people who eat cuy would be involved. <I know that takes a lot of gringos out of the mix, but I can see it would be hard eating something that used to be a pet. That’s what 4H is for – to harden that gag reflex when your pet pig becomes your breakfast bacon.> This community proposal came out of leadership programs coordinated by The Corporación Andina de Fomento and a consortium of universities. The current phase is to train about 25 producers and restaurant owners who serve 500 cuyes a week to improve productivity and customer service. The second phase will be to publicize the route.

Ecuador’s U-20 football team wins the South American championship.

Concierto Rock – There will be a rock concert, “La Música” este 15/2 a las 20:00 in the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamaríz with the Lignum Crusis and Nemesek bands. The show is being produced by the Cultural Unit of the U. of Cuenca and KAOS Producciónes Ec. Free.

Otras cosas –

Titular – La “minitri” va a Mundial (The “minitri” goes to World <Cup is understood except by those Americans who think NFL football is the only football in the world.>) This is about Ecuador’s Under 20, or U-20, football team winning the South American championship.

International Food Festival – About 2,500 people went to the event which raised about $40,000 for FASEC which provides palliative care to cancer patients. <The photos include pictures of Axel R., Leslie B., Angie A., and Henry N.>

Manteña culture – Ceramics and other archaeological remains of the Manteña culture (600 – 1532 AC) were discovered during a sewer and underground electric project in downtown Portoviejo. This culture occupied a territory from the Bahía de Caráquez to the Gulf of Guayaquil, the Isla Puná and the coastal strip of El Oro Province. They built large cities including Jaramijó, Camiloa, Cama and Jocay (now Manta), and they traded as far away as México and Chile.

Voto 2019 – Lauro López, a former councilman, is the mayoral candidate for the Justicia Conciencia Ciudadana alliance (lista 11-61), composed of the Justicia Social movement which is national, and the Conciencia Ciudadana Democrática which is from Azuay Province. He would:

Prioritize designing a “Plan de Desarrollo y Ordenamiento Territorial (PDOT – Land Planning and Development Plan) for the city.

Prioritize the functioning of the Tranvía as part of an integrated transport system.

Build two more transfer stations in the east and west as collectors for passengers from the periphery and rural parishes.

Use electric buses for those that pass through the city.

On mining – “creo en acciones concretas, no pienso que no debe darse minería tecnificada, una minería tecnificada, moderna, de mínimo impacto, porque no se puede decir que no tenga impacto puede darse.” <Sorry, but you’ll have to run it through your own translation program to see if you can figure out what he’s saying.> However, he would not support mining in sensitive areas such as water sources, wetlands, intangible zones, and ecological reserves.

Offer a security plan consisting of actions that would prevent, disuade, intervene and as a last resort, channel delinquents into the justice system.
Would not decide on relocating facilities the city has until a Master Plan that clearly shows locations where new community infrastructure could be built has been written.

Key issues for Cuenca –

Plan de Seguridad – He would develop a security plan in which the Consejo de Seguridad Ciudadana (CSC) would be the “articulador” (articulator?) for the institutions charged with public safety.

Sobre le aeropuerto – He doesn’t feel a new airport is needed given current conditions and the frequency of flights. He anticipates the need to remodel the terminal in about 50 years.

Mercado mayorista – The thinks the wholesale market should be somewhere else, and a big, modern new hypermarket built at El Arenal.

Vivienda social – The city owns about 2,700 sites and he proposes that the city could finance and construct buildings and condos on these sites.
Burocracia municipal – He proposes de-politicizing the administration and picking managers and directors based on their technical and professional qualifications rather than their political affiliations or who they know.

Modernizar administración – He would modernize the administration in all areas to guarantee getting through processes and paperwork in minimal time; and provide efficient service to improve service to the citizens.

Drunk drivers – Between el sábado and early yesterday morning, 18 drivers were arrested for driving drunk. All of them were considered seriously drunk and had to pay a fine of $394.00, loose 10 points off their licenses, and spend time in jail. Another two drivers were arrested for driving without a license and will spend 2 days in jail. <This is where your license from Illinois or where ever doesn’t count for nada unless you’re still a tourist.>

“Conduzco Seguro” – About 15,000 professional drivers of inter and intra provincial transport with types D and E licenses are starting a certification process in the “Safe Driving” program. <Is there anything like a smart key (like a mini-breathalyzer) that wouldn’t start the engine if it detected a certain alcohol level?>

Descuentos y compras –

Sheraton 4 Points – Valentine’s Day buffet dinner – jueves, 14/2 a las 20:00 – $19.99 includes live music and a glass of wine – call 2881 477 for reservations.

And that’s all for today so Hasta ? –
