Book launch – The second edition of “La Lengua Morlaca” by Oswaldo Encalada Vázquez will be presented el miércoles próximo a las 19:00 in the Salón de la Ciudad. Morlaca is a Cuencano language/ dialect (?) that mixes Spanish and quichua to give Cuencanos their own syntax and cadence in speech. The first edition of the book had about 1,300 words and phrases and the 2nd edition adds some 400 more. The book will be free to those that go to the opening.

Festival Cuenca es Joven (Cuenca is Youth Festival) – This festival of dance and theater started today with a dance performance from the Colegio Ciudad de Cuenca and a theater performance from the Unidad Educativa San Francisco from Ibarra. This format will be repeated during the +¡55ttt festival. All performances will be at 15:00 in the U. of Azuay auditorium.

ArteCalle – This art/performance festival started Monday with a performance at the Escuela Francesa and ended with a Noche Intercultural.

Vinyl festival – There will be a vinyl record festival el 14, 15, & 16/6 in the food court at the Mall del Río in honor of Fathers’ Day. There will be 12 exhibitors or collectors from Cuenca, Guayaquil and Quito. Oswaldo Morocho, one of the organizers, will have over 3,000 records for sale with prices from $1-20.00 with European LPs and certain artists going for up to $200.00. There will be 12 stores with 15,000 records to sell or exchange.

Tourist route – There is a new Ruta Turística Hampi Yaku (Agua Curativa – Curative water) between Yacuambi in Zamora Chinchipe and Saraguro in Loja. The route starts at the Saquea bridge, goes through La Paz, Yacuambi, and Tutupali. It continues to the páramo and to the lakes Cóndor Shillu until you get to Saraguro. It includes a lookout point, “Refugio de Montaña” at the lakes of the Cóndor Shillu, which was opened with a Wasipichana (A traditional event to clean bad energy out of a construction project before it’s occupied.) <You may have noticed crosses on some ridge beams. These are installed at these “housewarmings.” You may have also noticed the satellite dishes on newer houses – different ceremony.>

Seminario sobre Género y Derecho – The Colegio de Abogados del Azuay (Azuay Bar Association) and the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar are organizing a seminar for 3-7/6 on gender and law from a gender focus that would help the transformation of the practice of law to build a more just and equitable society between men and women.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Daños y 15 heridos fueron efectos del sismo: Ecuador (Damage and 15 injuries were the effects of the earthquake: Ecuador). In Peru, close to the epicenter, the death toll rose to two as a man struck by falling debris during the earthquake has died in a hospital. In total, 17 people were and injured and 240 structures were damaged in Peru. The earthquake was the strongest in the Western Hemisphere in 12 years. – See article in Monday’s CHL for more details.

Choclo – Corn had its festival in Nulti Sunday. It started with an ancestral ritual to thank Madre Tierra (Mother Earth) for an abundant harvest. About 30 growers brought grains, vegetables, squash and other plants grown naturally without chemical fertilizer. <Although at it’s most basic, aren’t steer manure and kitchen compost chemicals?> You could have bought fresh corn on the cob from the women who harvested their crop. <You know you’ve been in Ecuador too long when you discover you like the choclo better than the US yellow sweet corn.

Inmate graduate – Fausto S. graduated in Engineering with the highest possible score in a complex exam. The Servicio Nacional de Atención Integral a Personas Adultas Privadas de la Libertad y a Adolescentes Infractores (National Service of Integral Attention to Adult Persons Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders) guarantees access, permanence, continuation, and conclusion of studies to prisoners through agreements with schools and universities and the Ministerio de Educación. Fausto is the 3d prisoner in CRS Turi to get a 3 level university degree. <I don’t know what a level 3 degree is, but level 4 seems to be a Ph.D.> There are a total of 54 inmates in different majors in the prison at Turi. To facilitate their studies, they have an infocentro with 16 computers.
