Jun 15, 2019

Ecuador’s sub-20 football team scored 13 minutes into overtime on Friday, defeating Italy 1-0 and claiming 3rd place in the World Cup tournament in Poland. It was the highest international finish ever for either the sub-20 or national team.

Ecuador celebrates after victory over Italy in the sub-20 World Cup.

Richard Mina struck the winning goal minutes after Ecuador goalkeeper Moisés Ramírez blocked an Italian penalty kick. The game-ending shot was a hard, low strike between the left vertical and the goalkeeper.

The game was evenly contested in the 90 minutes of regulation time with both side missing opportunities to score. Ecuador came closest in the 55th minute when Leonardo Campana’s shot bounced off the goal post.

Ecuador lost the chance to play for the World Cup championship when it fell to South Korea 1-0 earlier in the week.
