Electric transportation forum, It’s Chile Week in Cuenca, Supermaxi promotes recycling

De la pagina cultura –

Club Pen meeting – The second meeting of the Club Pen, Ecuador chapter <maybe part of Pen International?> will be at 19:00 de hoy en el Pálier Café Libro. It is open to writers, journalists, and literati. <There ought to be enough gringo writers around who have enough Spanish to participate in this. Some of you may already be PEN members in the US.>

Iberescena 2018-2019 funds – Applicants interested in these grants for the scenic arts can apply starting at 23:59, 28/9 at www.iberescena.org/convocatorias/lineas-de-ayuda. Artists, groups and collectives whether natural persons or legal entities can apply in 3 modalities (or categories?).

Rally Cinematográfico – Proposals for making a short film of 5-10 minutes are being received at rallycineorquidea@gmail.com. The second edition of this film-making rally is being organized by the Film School and Department of Philosophy at the U. of Cuenca and the Festival de Cine la Orquidéa.

Laboratorio – This is the second week of “El Sur Cine Lab” being held at the Casa de la Cultura de Ecuador Núcleo del Azuay (CCE – remember that abbreviation), 4th floor. The intent of the sessions is to provide a space for local cinematographers and promote film projects. The lab will continue in the coming weeks.

Del cuerpa del periodico –

Libro – Lojano writer Alejandro Gallegos Rojas presented his book titled “La Orgía de los Gusanos” (The Orgy of Worms) Tuesday at the museo Remigio Crespo. <I’m imagining that tangle of snakes in the Indiana Jones movie only with worms.> The book has 87 micro stories with surprise endings that were written using irony, sarcasm and the absurd. They were written over the years in different countries where the author lived. <Sounds a good book for me – stories for people with short attention spans.>

Foro on Electromovilidad – The First International Forum on Electromobility is being held through Wednesday in the Aula Magna at the U. of Cuenca. A participant from Colombia talked about his country’s experiences in different modes of electric public transport including buses, trucks, taxis, motorbikes and bikes. To promote these mode of transportation, Colombia allows electric transport to be imported duty and IVA free.

Semana de Chile – Chile Week <the country, not the food> will run from mañana hasta el sábado (tomorrow to Sat.) <for those of you who have forgotten what you were supposed to learn before my sabbatical>. It will start Wednesday a las 10:00 in the Plaza de la Américas with a photo exhibit, “Rapa Nui – Mana y Misterio.”

Otras Cosas –

Titular – Embalse socava vía (Dam/reservoir undermines road) – the vía Cuenca-Girón-Pasaje which is Cuenca’s connection to Perú is showing damage near the dam for the Minas-San Francisco hydroelectric project including cracks and settlement between Km. 92 & 95. In places the water in the reservoir has undermined the verge of the roadway. <Drive carefully if you’re headed to Machala.>

Amor Animal – The Amor Animal (Animal love) Foundation now has 25 barrios in Cuenca with Brigadas Barriales de Protección Animal (Neighborhood Animal Protection Brigades) counting about 300 volunteers. Part of the mission of this organization is getting veterinary attention for abandoned domestic animals and sterilization. <So if you’re not part of this or other efforts, quit complaining that “somebody needs to do something about all those stray dogs.”>

Environmental campaign – Supermaxi and Megamaxi are starting an environmental campaign involving their customers. Their shopping bags this month will be green, blue and black to facilitate household waste disposal – organic garbage such as fruit peels and vegetable trimmings in green bags; recyclables such as paper, cardboard, plastics and glass in blue; and the rest in black. For the last 10 years their plastic bags have been oxo-biodegradable and the new colored bags will contain 50% recycled material. The Corporación Favorita (La Favorita foods) also has an environmental program utilizing the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle through which it recycled 11,500 tons of material in 2017. <Are you going to do your part and separate your garbage?>
