Paramedics were called to the scene at 3 p.m. but were unable to resuscitate the man due to the severity of his injuries. The body was transferred to the Cuenca Forensic Center for a necropsy.

A police spokesman said the accident occurred on a heavily traveled section of Ordoñez Lasso, a divided street in a neighborhood of mid-rise condominiums popular with foreign residents. He said that the victim’s wife was with him at the time of the accident. The spokesman said the man was believed to be a North American.
