Otras cosas –

Titular – Crucial fallo en Día de la Mujer (Crucial failure in Women’s Day) – There has been an increase in cases of femicide; sexual abuse; and violence including psychological, verbal, patrimonial and economic; and sexual harassment, even though there have been gains in the area of rights. Women from various collectives and social organizations gathered on International Women’s Day which coincided with the “Mangajo” case in which a 34 year old man is accused of drugging and raping a 15 year old. Demonstrators were outside the Complejo Judicial del Azuay yesterday, waiting for the sentence. The sanction for rape is 19-22 years and can increase to 29 years, 4 months if it is considered aggravated.

Floods in Manabí – Heavy rain in several cantons in Manabí Province caused flooding that completely covered roads in some barrios. The Manta and Burro Rivers overflowed. <Pobre Manabiteños (?) – earthquakes and then floods.>

Competition for new Attorney General – Diana Salazar, current director of the Unidad de Análisis Financiero del Ecuador (UAFE), received the highest number of points in the competition organized by the Temporary Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control to select a new Attorney General with 88.17 out of 100. <And here comes your civics lesson for the day.> The top 5 scorers have 2 days to exercise their right to argue for a revision. After this, the phase of citizen’s challenges will start. The points awarded could vary after the completion of that phase.

Taxi cards – Cuenca is the first city to submit information required from legal taxi drivers, and to hand out debit cards to taxistas to compensate them for the increase in gas prices that went into effect last 26/12. The cards went to Unión de Cooperativas de Transporte en Taxis del Azuay (UCTTA) members whose president said that giving out these cards does not benefit us, but the riders. Because with an increase in gas, we also need to increase the price of trips. <I wonder what the next reason for asking for fare increases will be since this one has been resolved with a gas subsidy.> The cards cost $2.00 and drivers can get them at ANT or the Banco del Pacifico by presenting required documents.
