A judge in Quito has revoked the pre-trial detention order for ex-Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño, ruling that Patiño should pay a bail of $50,000 to avoid detention.

Ecuador’s attorney general has pledged to continue the investigation of charges that Patiño made inflammatory comments that could have incited violence to supporters in a speech last October in Latacunga.

In mid-April, another judge requested that Interpol issue a warrant to detain Patiño after he had left the country and traveled to Mexico City. Patiño, who served as the foreign minister in the government of former president Rafael Correa between 2010 and 2016 is charged with “making comments to instigate violence” in a speech attacking the government of President Lenin Moreno.
