Inauguración – The grand opening of a medical center built using 3 liter plastic bottles in Punta Hacienda parish in Quingeo will be el sábado a las 10:00. The medical center has 130 sq. m. with 2 doctor’s offices – one for ancestral medicine and the other for traditional medicine. The idea started 5 years ago when Mariángela Serrano won a scholarship from an Israeli development agency. The project was to collect the bottles and apply a construction technique known as “ladrillo verde” (green brick – your words for the day). The bottles are filled with sand, earth or garbage and used as bricks to build earthquake resistant walls. <As long as the garbage isn’t compostable material. Imagine your wall blowing up one day.> The community committed to collecting 7,000 bottles and eventually collected 15,000. High schools were also involved in collecting and they wound up with 20,000. One resident of Quingeo also built a small space in his house with bottles and the community now sees plastic bottles not as garbage, but as a building material.

Reducing cars will save from $45,000-50,000/mo., with the savings being used for investments. Reducing coordinators will save about $300,000. Currently salaries for various positions are: Coordinator – $3,798.00, Dep’t heads – $,3409.44, Council member – $2,504.50, Driver 2 – $882.85, Driver 1 – $596.00, Department assistant – $675.00, and Mayor – $5,009.00.

Mining camps destroyed – After a 3 month investigation, the 3d División de Ejército de Tarqui found 5 camps near the banks of the río Santa Bárbara in Sígsig which had tools for illegal mining. Military intelligence personnel figured that each camp could hold between 30 & 40 workers, most of them Colombian, Venezuelan and Peruvian. They verified that the activity was contaminating the river. The camps and tools were destroyed and personnel from the Agencia de Regulación y Control Minero placed the “clausura” (closing seals). <What did they leave standing to paste those seals on? Or did they just drop it into the ashes?>

And that’s all for today so Hasta ? –
