Tribute – There is a 3 day tribute to poet Medardo Ángel Silva on the 100th anniversary of his death at age 21. There will be talks Thursday a las 18:00 and 19:00 in the “Las Monjas” auditorium at the U. of Cuenca.

Concierto de boleros – Jorge Calle and Hugo Vinueza will sing a “Seranata a Papá a Ritmo de Bolero” el viernes próximo a las 20.” in the teatro Sucre. Cost: $5.00.

Coro Polifónico – The San José de Calasanz primary school will present a program, “Día de la Familia” el próximo viernes a las 17:45 in the Museo de Arte Moderno.

Ecuador will play Italy for 3rd place in sub-20 World Cup competition.

Exposición – The show, “Acústico/Acuático. Sonoridades y visiones del agua” (Acoustic / Aquatic. Sounds and visions of water) by composer Jannet Alverado and visual artist Carlos Heredia, opened hoy a las 19:00 in the sala Proceso at the CCE (Luis Cordero 7-22 y Pres. Córdova).

Cantonization of Cañar – The agenda for this 195th anniversary has 61 social, sports, and cultural activities this month and into the beginning of julio. The activities start mañana. The election of the Queen of Cañar will be el viernes a las 14:00 in the José Peralta stadium. Inti Raymi will be from 21-23/6 in the Parque de Guantug and the Complejo Arqueológico Ingapirca. On 24/6 a las 10:00 there will be a mass the San Antonio church. On 25/6 a las 9:00 there will be a parade with a solemn session in the Centro Cívico a las 15:00. On 30/6 a las 11:00 there will be the Rock in the Park Festival in the Parque Guantug.

Otras cosas –

Titular – Tricolores Sub 20 por el tercer lugar (Tricolor Sub 20 for the third place) – South Korea beat Ecuador 1-0. <I knew it was fútbol, and the Tricolor refers to Ecuador, but I couldn’t figure out what Sub 20 is. So I asked the waiter since they had the TVs tuned to that game. He told me it’s the under 20 year olds. Is this fútbol’s scouting system?>

Child Labor – A National Congress on Child Labor in Ecuador was held lunes y martes. Because of poverty and extreme poverty, 8 out of 100 children work. 17% of child labor is in rural zones, and 2% in urban zones. <Children as a percentage of all workers?> In order to eradicate child labor, poverty must be reduced. One panelist said an important strategy is identifying the adults responsible for the child worker and give that adult the opportunity to work. <A better solution than putting the adult in jail for not taking care of the kid.>

Cuencana scientist in top 100 – Linda Guamán was chosen as one of the 100 leaders of the future of biotechnology by MIT and Harvard.

Mayor’s team – Mayor Palacios has appointed managers for the municipal businesses, and departmental directors. <If you’re interested, the article on p. 3 of the print paper is titled “Casi completo equipo del alcalde,” and has a list of the appointees. <Interesting that the list has more architects than lawyers.>

Free on-line classes – Applicants to the University can take classes for the “Ser Bachiller” test for getting into the U. There are also practice exams at the website <This is your chance to find out if you know as much as a high school graduate. I bet you don’t, unless the citizenship test covers some of the same things.>

Ecuador takes a park to the UN – Ecuador assembled one of its “parques infantiles inclusivos” (inclusive playgrounds) in the UN Plaza in NY. These have been installed around the country to help kids with disabilities. The UN installation was to set an example for other countries. <Cuenca has 1 or 2 of these parks. Very cool play structures.>
