Ecuador’s Labor Day holiday just turned into a four-day weekend, thanks to President Lenin Moreno. By presidential decree, Moreno made Monday, ahead of the May 1 International Labor Day, a national holiday.

According to the decree, Monday is a mandatory holiday for both public and private employees. All public offices as well as public and private schools will also be closed.
On Thursday night Moreno said he hoped the long weekend would allow all more people to travel, boosting the country’s tourism industry. “People should get and have a good time, visit friends and family, and take advantage of a well-deserved break.”
On Tuesday, most cities in town will host the traditional May Day labor parades. The largest parades will be in Guayaquil, Quito and Cuenca.
