Otras cosas –

Titular – Menos fondos y más deudas inquietan a U. (Less funding and more debt disturbs U.) – Universities are facing the risk of reduced funding for their 2019 budgets. The U. of Cuenca would lose $9 million. The Estado (State, referring to the Federal Government – I will be using Estado which is less typing than Federal Government.) currently owes $8 million in IVA returns and $6.6 in monies earned by the university.

New buses – The first of the new bus fleet is already on the roads. Of the 19 buses already purchased by the Cámara de Transporte de Cuenca, 13 have been delivered. 19 buses will be added each month until el próximo junio. In julio, the deliveries will be increased until feb/2020 when all 475 buses will be replaced.

Each bus will have two drivers <no – they’re not going to both sit in the front like in a driver’s ed car> so that instead of one driver working from 6:00 until 22:00, there will be two shifts – from 6-14:00 and 14-22:00. In spite of the changes, passengers are still complaining about buses not complying with schedules and bad treatment of passengers, especially as they try to leave the bus. Since last weekend, EMOV EP has been training 600 drivers in groups of 60. Each group gets training over 5 weekends in transit laws, good treatment of passengers, gender violence prevention, and other things such as how to transport passengers with disabilities. <Now if only EMOV could follow up the training with an effective system to receive complaints and meaningful penalties for ignoring that training.>

Summit – The XXVI Cumbre Iberoamericana will be held in Antigua, Guatemala this jueves y miércoles with a focus on decreased economic growth and worries about Argentina, Venezuela and Brazil. The Latin American economy grew 1.3% and 1.2% in 2017 and 2018, with 2.2% projected for 2019. Ecuador’s growth in 2018 and 19 is projected to be 1.1% and 0.7%; just behind Brazil with 1.4 and 2.4%; and ahead of contracting economies Argentina, Nicaragua and Venezuela whose economy is projected to contract by 18%. Venezuela is also facing hyperinflation which is projected to be 1,350,000% in 2018. <A country couldn’t print money fast enough.>

Tranvía – Neighbors of the Tranvía, especially along Mariscal Lamar y Gran Colombia are asking for more enforcement to prevent drivers from parking on the tracks and possibly damaging them. <I think it will take a Tranvía/ parked vehicle collision before Cuencano drivers decide “solo un ratito” won’t work.>

Christmas lights – The Fundación Municipal Iluminar will start installing lights and lit figures along the Tomebamba today starting at El Vado and the U. of Cuenca. Tomorrow it will start installing the 35 m. tall tree in El Otorongo. The work of installing the 600,000 lights throughout the city including the rural parishes will take 20 days. A music and color filled inaugural ceremony will be in early diciembre.
