Sculpture – The show, “Serie Reconocimiento: Virgilio Quinde, maestro escultor” (Recognition Series: Virgilio Quinde, master sculptor), will run through enero de 2019 in artist’s house-workshop-gallery in the ciudadela Carlos Crespi (calle de Los Morochos y Avenida Miraflores).
Festival de villancicos – The last performance of the school carolling contest will be tomorrow. Today’s was in the Juan Eljuri store across from Parque Calderón. <Who knows where tomorrow’s contestants will sing.>

Exposición – There is a showing of photos organized by the Gremio de Fotógrafos (Photographers’ Guild) in the Casa de la Provincia. The photos are of Cuenca in the 60’s and 70’s, many in black and white, of buildings no longer standing and of people prominent in Cuenca’s history. <At least I think they’ve got pictures of people in it.>
Expo Regalo 2018 – There will be a 2018 Gift Fair from the 20-23/12 at the Mansión Vizcaya with 80 exhibitors selling shoes, jewelry, fashion, toys, food, cosmetics and more. There are other activities planned such as raffles, music, and dance.

Titular – Perenne cuidado para evitar daños (Perennial care to avoid damage) <I like perenne for our word for the day. Not too many times it’s the 1st word I see.) There are 300 security cameras in Cuenca, 70 belonging to the Consejo de Seguridad Ciudadana and 230 to the ECU 911 system. The maintenance of the cameras is permanent with the climate as the principal factor affecting these electronic devices. The CSC cameras have a range of 400m in the day and 200 at night and contain speakers. The ECU cameras have a 350 m range through 360 degrees with night vision. <Does that make you feel safer?>
New car sales in Azuay <I wonder how many of them get sold by dealers owned by the Eljuris. Almost all?> Between enero and noviembre, 2018, 11,925 new vehicles were sold in southern Ecuador with 9,103 in Azuay, 295 in Cañar, and 2,527 in Loja. This represents 8.9% of the car sales in the country and a 9.4% increase over the same period in 2017.
Odebrecht – <Does anyone still remember that scandal?> The Brazilian construction firm Odebrecht paid $442,754 in bribes in Ecuador between 2/2007 and 7/2009 and was awarded two hydrolic projects: Carrizal-Chone and Multipropósito Baba. The information was part of more accounts received by the Fiscalía de Brasil from Odebrecht’s CEO, Marcelo Odebrecht.
Dollarization – Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles warned of de facto dollarization in the country where the dollar is being used for transactions from buying property to cars to shoes and clothing because Venezuelans have no confidence in the bolívar which is losing more than 3% of its value every day. It’s estimated that the inflation rate for 2018 will be 2,000%.
