Exposición – As part of the Bienal, the show, “El Ocaso de la Naturaleza: Ecosistemas y paisajes en el arte ecuatoriano actual” (The Sunset of Nature: Ecosystems and landscapes in current Ecuadorian art) will be showing at the Salón del Pueblo Efraín Jara Idrovo (Mariscal Sucre y Benigno Malo) until 3/2.
Taller – There will be a workshop, “Mano a Mano,” mañana de 17-20:00 in the space for the new Galería de Diseño in the Sala de Conciertos in the CCE. The space for Diseñno en Azuay will be where there is currently a chocolate covered fruit business. <And here is where I’m not sure I read the article correctly.> The workshop will be a design charrette/ brainstorming session to design the new space. <If so, this is for all of you frustrated architects out there.>
Encuentro de Lectura – There will be a reading workshop for students este miércoles, 16/1 in the Biblioteca Municipal “Antonio Lloret Bastidas,” where they will read theater classics. There will be a second workshop el miércoles, 30/1 at the same location.

Reload Fest 2019 – This music festival will be at El Centro Cultural República Sur (Pres. Córdova 5-55) este viernes, 25/1 a las 21:00. Bands will be playing urban sounds, experimental music <Is that the kind of music that leaves you wondering, “Is this music or just noise?” or thinking you’d rather listen to your neighbor’s car alarm.>, classic rock, and electronic music.
Muestra – The exhibit, “Naturaleza, calma y armonía” (Nature, calm and harmony) by Hortensia López Novillo will open el miércoles, 16/1 in the Galería de la Alcaldía de Cuenca (Borrero y Simón Bolivar).
Album launch – The Músika group will launch “Tribus,” their new album el viernes, 18/1 a las 20:00 in the Teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz. Free.
Cine – The Department of Philosophy, Sociology and Economy has opened the competition for the presentation of Master Class proposals in the academic program, Jornadas de Cine y Filosofía. Dates are 9, 16, 23 & 30/3 nad 6,13,20 & 27/7 in the Facultad de Filosofía.

Concierto – The OAC will perform its Concierto Festivo de Año Nuevo 2019 this weekend in the iglesia de El Sagrario.

Titular – Cierres parciales en la Cuenca-Azogues (Partial closures on Cuenca-Azogues) – Currently, 17,000 vehicles use the vía Cuenca-Azogues-Biblián daily, a number which is expected to reach 31,000 within 25 years. MTOP will be redoing various interchanges that are congested. The business arm of the U. of Cuenca is doing traffic studies at redondels on the route. There will be traffic restrictions from 20:00 to 1:00, today between the IESS redondel and calle Potosí; tomorrow, 15/1, 2 lanes from the IESS redondel towards the south; and on miércoles, closure of two lanes of the vía a Baguanchi.
Venezuela – Juan Guaidó, the President of the Asamblea Nacional de Venezuela which is the only body of government in the hands of the opposition, was briefly detained by the Servicio Bolivariano de Inteligencia (Sebin) agents. This was strongly condemned by various American states and the Grupo de Lima including some nations which called it a kidnapping. The Venezuelan Minister of Communication called it an irregular action by agents who have since been fired. <Right – blame everything on those “rogue” agents.>
IESS – A proposal by the Government to overcome the crisis at IESS by raising the retirement age and raising the contribution, was met with indignation and rejected by workers’ and retiree groups.
Recovery clinic fire – Two people were sentenced to preventive prison for alleged murder in the deaths of 18 youths in a fire in a drug and alcohol recovery clinic in Guayaquil. The patients were not voluntarily committed and were locked in with padlocks and chains. 5 people have been arrested on charges of kidnapping.
Suspect rescued – One of two delinquents caught robbing parked cars in El Valle was almost burned by neighbors, tired of car robberies. The two robbers fled in a car without plates and were chased by the owners of the vandalized cars. When the thieves stopped, they were surrounded by over 100 people armed with sticks, rocks, ropes and gasoline. The thief who was caught was rescued by the Special Operations Group which reinforced the Policía National. Two police were injured.
Inauguration – The Minas-San Francisco hydroelectric plant in Pucará at km. 92 on the vía Cuenca-Pasaje will today a las 10:00. The project was started in diciembre of 2011 and will generate 275 megawatts of power.
