Cuenca’s newest shopping mall, featuring the city’s largest movie complex, opens today on the city’s west side. According to its owners, the Ortiz Group, El Batán Shopping begins operation with 74 stores and 13 restaurants in the food court. The mall in located on Av. Remigio Crespo and Calle Santa Cruz.
In addition to the seven-screen Multicines movie complex, El Batán is anchored by a 80,000 square foot Coral Hypermercado. “We will be 90 percent occupied at our opening and hope to have all commercial spaces filled within two months,” said Fernando Cordero, Ortiz group spokesman.
He added that the mall location was chosen to serve those living in the central city. “The other large shopping centers in Cuenca are located outside the central area and our research showed that this area lacks modern shopping options. We believe we are filling and important need.”
According to Cordero, mall construction took six months longer than expected due to an underground stream discovered during excavation. “This required us to install a pumping system to divert the water flow and protect the foundation.”
The mall has 500 parking spaces.
