Otras cosas –
Titular – A punto el primer puente peatonal (First pedestrian bridge almost ready) – For the safety of passersby along av. De Las Américas, the city is building two bridges over the road. One is at calle Tarqui and connects to calle Humboldt and should be ready at the end of diciembre. The other is at the redondel Las Américas and av. Turuhuayco which is at 30% completion. These two and more bridges will be built at points identified as most congested. Other projects will include interchanges at traffic bottlenecks. These include adding lanes from the Las Cholas redondel to the Parque Industrial; and building interchanges to replace existing redondels which are overloaded at rush hours at av. Paseo de los Cañaris y González Suárez, the Gasolinera de los Choferes, and Miraflores at Turuhuayco. The interchange at the Gasolinera is ready to go, but will need to wait until all the Tranvía work is complete in Milchichig since traffic detoured around Milchichig uses the Gasolinera redondel. <Surprisingly good thinking.>
Fines on vehicles – SRI is sending notices to ex-owners to pay taxes on vehicles. Owners who have sold cars where the buyers did not register the sale with the SRI are having problems since as owner of record, they are receiving the notices of taxes due and of fines against the vehicle. <This seems to be a case of seller beware.>
Domestic workers – A study, “Situación del trabajo renumerado el hogar en Ecuador” (Situation of paid household work in Ecuador), was published este jueves. The study found practices that were semi-feudal with discrimination and xenophobia against paid household workers. The census indicated there were about 220,000 household workers but the Ministerio de Trababjo has only counted 60,000 which indicates gaps in compliance with workers’ contracts, payments for social security and retirement, vacations, work days, and basic salaries. <Does that mean 160,000 household workers are illegally employed?> Immigrants, many of them Venezuelans are especially vulnerable and some are barely paid $100/mo and are working in situations of semi-slavery. <I hope none of you readers is abusing your household help and that your cleaning ladies have contracts and you pay into IESS and give them their annual raises along with the 13th and 14th month payments.>
Mercado 12 de Abril – A drawing was held to assign the 197 spaces in the market. The vendors needed to show their contract for a space, cedula and voter certificate. The first floor of the market will have vegetable, fruit, grains, seafood, meats, and more. The upper level will have dairy products, eggs, new and used clothing, and hornado (roast pig).
From El Mercurio of miércoles, 14/11 –
Refugio de mascotas – The city has identified a 12.8 hectare site in the La Posada sector of Cumbe Parish for an animal refuge with a capacity to shelter 800-1,000 dogs. The construction of a shelter was part of the 2016 Ordenanza para el Control y Manejo de la Fauna Urbana y la Protección de Animales Domésticos de Compañía de Cuenca. The land needs to declared for a public use with a payment of about $200,000 to the owners. Two animal welfare organizations, ARCA and Familia Amor Animal (FAAN) will be responsible for running the shelter. Both are non-profits made up of volunteers. Currently ARCA shelters 200 dogs and FAAN about 250.
