Bienal – The Biennial will close mañana with a ceremony a las 19:00 in the MMAM.

Del cuerpo del periodico –

La Ruta de la Caña de Azúcar – This tourist route was launched today in an interpretive center housed in the Restaurante CORVEL in Paute. The Sugar Cane Route came out of a theses project by a group of U. of Cuenca students and has linked private businesses. The stops include mills and factories where you can see the milling, fermentation and distillation of the cane into liquor. The hacienda La Abuela produces cane liquor mixed with chocolate and coffee, Abre Boca makes white cane liquor with a special aroma, Fruilan mixes sugar cane with a fruit from Bulán called zaxuma. The Zhumir and Cristal factories are also on the tour. <The heck with your facilitator unless they have a car. After all the sampling and purchasing you’re going to need a driver.> Cane production in the canton has been reduced, partly because La Josefina disaster wiped out fields on the river banks, and partly because of the demonization of alcohol production. <Only need to demonize the production of that rotgut that occasionally kills party goers.> Currently Paute has 42 hectares planted in cane.

Guachapala – Guachapala celebrated its 24 years as a canton. The town of 3,409 as of the last census has some tourist attractions. It is known for the Señor de Andacocha religious sanctuary which attracts thousands of tourists each year. There is a water park with slides, heated pools, and a wave pool. From the Mirador de Peña Blanca you can see the whole city.

Otras cosas –

Titular – 13 escuelas rurales reabiertas en Azuay (13 rural schools reopened in Azuay) – See Friday’s CHL article for the full story.

Cochlear implants – The “Vicente Corral Moscoso” public health hospital activated cochlear devices and hearing aids that were given to 54 children who were born without hearing. The hospital recommended testing children’s hearing early as early detection of problems makes rehabilitation easier.

Explosion – An explosion in the storeroom of a fireworks workshop killed a woman in Baños de Cuenca la tarde de este jueves, 31/1.

Camarones – Ecuador will re-enter the Brazilian market with shrimp after the Organización Mundial de Comercio found that Ecuadorian shrimp meets all international sanitary requirements, and Brazilian requirements. <Do they freeze it and put it on boats or fly it? If it goes on boats, would it go thru the Panama Canal or the Straits of Magellan?>

Descuentos y compras –

And that´s all for today so hasta la próxima semana –
