OSC – The Cuenca Symphony Orchestra has several programs planned to close out the season.
jueves, 13/12 and viernes, 14/12 – special programs with the music from “Star Wars” and “imágenes en movimiento” (moving images) <Isn’t that what they used to call movies?> – teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz – concerts at 10:00 for schools, and at 20:00 for the general public.
“sound tracks” – music from the movies “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Harry Potter” will be at the parque Miraflores.
Christmas concert – jueves, 20/12 a las 20:00 – Iglesia de la Merced – with the Fundación Musarte Chorus.

An electric bus on the streets of Cuenca

Expo de cestería – A Basketry Expo opened today a las 19:00 in the Museo Pumapungo. The exhibit combines science, ethnographics, anthropology and academia. The exhibit will be open for 3 months with hours from 8-18:00 every day including holidays and weekends.

Electronic music – “Marsatac Cuenca” hoy a las 21:00 – in the Casa de la Provincia (Tomas Ordóñez across from the parque de San Blas) – free.

Giant rosero – 65 people are preparing about 5,000 glasses of rosero, an emblematic fruit drink, for a celebration in Gualaceo. The rosero will be sold el domingo, 16/12. Stores and restaurants will be participating in “Gualaceo de Locura” on sábado y domingo.

Otto Sonnenholzner – 35 yrs. old, married with 3 children. Specialist in International Economics. Professor of Economy of Business Sciences at the U. of Guayaquil and part of the Ecuadorian Broadcasting Association. Speaks German, English & French.
Nancy Vasco de Maldonado – from Quito, 60 yrs old. Director of the Fundación El Triángulo, a non-profit to help people with mental disabilities in education, vocation, and inclusion in the labor market. Manages the business, Frestflor Comercial. Studied comunicación social (journalism).
Agustín Albán Maldonado – from Guayaquil, 51 yrs. old. Currently resides in México and is rector of the Universidad Univermilienium. Degree in Economics and Political Philosophy with honors from Brown University. Chairs the Consejo Educativo de la Escuela Europea de Dirección y Empresa. Was in finance and advised the Mexican government between 1993-1994. Started his career in Mergers & Acquisitions at Citibank in their NY office. <Those sound like exactly the background you’d need to have if you wanted to hide ginormous amounts of money all over the globe.>

Tranvía – The city is in negotiations with Alstrom for the preventive maintenance of the system. The amount of the contract is in reserve, but is high for the city. Alstrom built the cars as part of the construction consortium dating back to 2013. The fare for the Tranvía will also be determined this month and expected to be between 35 and 50¢. There have been various estimates of daily ridership. A study estimated between 35,000 and 60,000. Metro Tenerif which will operate the system for the first 3 years and 7 months estimate 48,000 initially. A member of the citizens’ oversight group recalled that the Tranvía 4 Ríos planned for 120,000 daily. <Uh-oh. Seems like the operation might be a bigger mess than the construction.>

China visit – Pes. Moreno announced he will visit China from 11-14/12 to get investments to develop strategic sectors of the country. <Getting deeper in debt.>

Public announcement – There will be a temporary closure of the right lane of the Autopista Cuenca Azoques starting lunes, 10/12 for 40 days for sewer work. The closure will be between from the off ramp to Nulti to the Primax Gas Station in the Colinas de Challuabamba sector.

Bus cards – You have until 31/1/2019 to exchange your Urbania cars for the current Movilízate card.

Electric bus – There is an electric bus in the Lancomtri fleet. The bus was built by a Chinese firm, Build Your Dreams (BYD). The battery has a useful life of 15 years, a range of 300 km, and charges in 4-5 hours. The bus costs around $420,000 as opposed to diesel buses which cost from $120-130,000. The loan on the bus is free <or maybe the bus is being loaned free of charge> in order to do a cost analysis. The bus gets recharged at the U. of Cuenca which is part of this project and which installed the BYD 80 kw/hr. charger.

Nacional de Caballos Peruanos de Paso – The XXI Concurso Ciudad de Cuenca de Caballo Peruano de Paso (City of Cuenca of Peruvian Pacers Horse Contest) will be on the 19 & 20/1/2019 at the Cuartel General Davalos. Free.
