Planetarium women events – The Municipal Planetarium is recognizing women working in science, art and social areas with film, photo exhibits and conferences. There will be 2 programs per week starting mañana a las 17:00 with Daniela Ballari talking about “La vida secreta de los mapa” (The secret life of maps) and el jueves a las 19:00 a showing of the film “Agora.” Next week, on 20/3, Paola Reino will talk about “Astronomiá e Ingeniería,” and on jueves, 21/3 a las 19:00, the film “Talentos ocultos” (Hidden talents) will be shown. In the last week in marzo, on miércoles, 27/3, Alexandra Espinoza and María del Cisno Aguirre will talk on “La arquitectura y la mujer.” El jueves, 28 a las 19:00 “Gorilas en la niebla” (Gorillas in the Mist) will be shown.
Teatro – Two young actors are staging “Heredarán las piedras” (They will inherit the stones) written by Marc Egea as a sequel to Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People. It will be performed el 22 & 23/3 a las 20:00 in the teatro Imay (calles El Batán y El Oro).

Titular – Denuncias en contra de Serrano y Cabezas (Complaints against Serrano and Cabezas) – Fernando Balda of the PSP party has accused both of “concusión” (pay to play).
Cpccs – There are 43 people running for the Consejo de Participación Ciudadana y Control Social, many with political and party interests including some with a clear party affiliation. Voters will be asked to pick 3 men, 3 women, and a delegate of one of the nationalities. The “Ciudadanía y Desarollo” organization is compaigning for people to vote “nulo.” <I think a blank or none of the above vote.> If these votes exceed the valid votes, there will be a re-election. Another view was that there should be a constitutional amendment to abolish the Consejo..
Mercado 12 de Abril – There is no definite date for the reopening of the market which is 90% complete and was scheduled to reopen in July, 2018. <Who realistically expects public works projects to finish on time anyway?> Acting Mayor Ruth Caldas announced that it would be reopened between the 15 & 20/3. It can open once the furniture for the grocery area, 68 tables in the dining area, and furniture for the butcher section are delivered. The market will have 560 merchants, a parking lot for 97 cars plus motorcycle and bicycle parking, and an elevator from the parking to the commercial area. Next to the market will be a a Centro de Desarrollo Infantil (CDI – Child Development Center), a Farmasol, a municipal collection point <where you can pay your utility & city bills?>, an ATM zone, an auditorium and multiple use fields.
The parking lot for the 10 de Agosto market is 60% complete and will have 70 spaces plus areas for bikes and motos.
Drug seizures – A plane carrying drugs crashed and burned in Manabí. Two foreigners who were injured were arrested. In Carchi, in the operation “Silenciador” (Muffler), police seized 376,200 of heroin (sic) and arrested two people. Operation “Alta Mar” (High Seas) netted 540 kilos of cocaine in a speed boat bound for Central America and made 5 arrests.
Water service restored – 7,200 people in Turi, El Valle, and Baños have been without water service since el domingo due to a broken main from the Nero water project. The main is next to the road connecting the Autopista with the jail and broke from the weight 5-6 m. of earth above. The fill was placed when the road was built. Two water tankers were assigned to deliver water, but were not enough. Water service will be restored gradually starting from the lower elevations.
Public announcement – The city is announcing the land acquisition for the Domestic Animal Refuge Project, and accepting technical information of the boundaries of the site.
Tax declarations due – If you made over $11,270 during 2018 <I think Ecuadorian income only.> you declare your income on a schedule based on your cedula number. If the 9th number is 1, declare by 10/3. If 2, the 12th and so on until 0, declare by the 28th. <If you made that much here, you probably know what to do anyway. Unless you’re doing it under the table – isn’t that how they got Al Capone?>
Taiwanese learning Spanish – High school and university students are studying Spanish language, culture, film, and painting. <I could see if it were mainland China – preparing people to work on all their Latin American projects.>
Venezuela – Power has been out in Venezuela since last Thursday which meant water service went out as well. There have been 21 deaths at hospitals.
