Airport to close during Carnival for repairs
Cuenca’s Mariscal La Mar Airport will close from 10 p.m. Saturday, February 6, until 6 p.m. Monday, February 8 for repairs and upgrades. The Cuenca Airport Corporation, which manages the facility, said it picked Carnival weekend for the closure due to the reduced amount of flights operating into and out of the city.
Officials said that minor repairs will be made to the runway and tarmac afer which a sealant will be applied to the asphalt. “The procedure will extend the life of the surfaces and improve traction for aircraft,” a corporation spokesman said. He added that arrangements have been made with Lan and Tame, the airlines operating at the airport, for the closure. “The action only involves eight flights.”
During the closure, airport personnel will also make changes to signage and lighting in the main terminal.
Cost of the work is estimated to be $480,000.
