Moreno’s inauguration will attract at least 14 Latin American presidents
More than a dozen heads-of-state have confirmed their attendance at Wednesday’s presidential inauguration ceremony of Lenin Moreno in Quito.
Among the Latin American presidents who say they will attend are Argentina’s Mauricio Macri, Bolivia’s Evo Morales, Chile’s Michelle Bachelet, Colombia’s Juan Manuel Santos, Paraguay’s Horacio Cartes, and Peru’s Pedro Pablo Kuczynski
Also expected to attend are Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela; Luis Guillermo Solís, Costa Rica; Jimmy Morales, Guatemala; Jovenel Moise, Haiti; and Juan Orlando Hernandez, from Honduras.
El Salvador will be represented by Vice President Oscar Samuel Ortiz while Cuba is sending Vice President Miguel Diaz.
Unnamed representatives from Canada, the U.S. and several European and Middle Eastern countries will also attend the ceremony.
The announced attendance of Venezuela President Maduro has been criticized by several politicians, including Guayaquil Mayor Jaime Nebot and Quito Mayor Mauricio Rodas, who object to Maduro’s handling of anti-government protests in Venezuela. Rodas announced last week that Maduro would not receive the city honors that will bestowed on other heads-of-state.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
