Morning quake rocks Loja and El Oro

An earthquake measuring 6.2 degrees on the Richter scale was recorded Monday morning, just west of the Ecuador-Peru border. The quake occurred about 60 miles west of Loja and was felt strongly in Loja and in the area near the Cerros de Amotape National Park in northern Peru.

In addition to Loja, the quake, which occurred at 6:34 a.m., was felt in Guayaquil, Machala, Huaquillas, Guayaquil, Duran, and Cuenca.

Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute said it had received reports of minor damage in Loja and El Oro Provinces in Ecuador, as well as in northern Peru.
