Cuenca Vice Mayor -Councilman Pablo Burbano’s appeal of the decision that the vice-mayor should be a woman was accepted. In a two-to-one decisions, an appeals court overruled the national Ombudsman that had found the election of Burbano to be discriminatory against women. He will retake the vice-mayorship from Marisol Peñalosa, an indigenous woman. The court ruled that Burbano had been elected in a fair democractic process.

Lasso on mining – Presidential candidate Guillermo Lasso talked about mining and said it should not be permitted at altitudes above 2,800 m. <So how high are the currently operating and proposed mines – 2,750 m.?>

Carnival rides – At least 56 applications for Independencia de Cuenca events have been made, and only 16 have completed all the paperwork. The requirements depend on the type of event. Carnival rides need technical evaluations, safety plans, and permission from the Fire Department. 7 carnivals have been applied for and only the one planned for Totoracocha has been approved.

Water service interruption – There will be irregular water service Friday from 14:00 to 20:00 in the following sectors: Las Orquídeas, Los Trigales, Santa Teresita de Monay, y Rayoloma due to scheduled maintenance.

Water contamination – A pig farmer was sentenced to 3 years for contaminating the water in Cachihuayco Creek. The sentence also included cleaning the Pichacay sector and the banks of the creek and río Chordeleg under the supervision of the Ministerio del Ambiente. <You think maybe the court doesn’t trust him an inch?> He also has to plant 1,000 along the banks of the río Chordeleg, and offer a public apology on public media and read the apology in the church and a school in the parish.

The Ministerio de Salud (Health Dep’t) had previously closed the farm, but he reopened it, severely contaminating the creek and river. <Sounds like it must have been a good sized farm – way more than Babe and one litter.>

And that´s all for today so hasta el noviembre –
