Chapman, who currently serves as deputy secretary of the Office of Political and Military Affairs for the U.S. State Department, has held various positions in U.S. embassies around the world.

In the 1990s, he held diplomatic postings in several countries, including Bolivia and Costa Rica. He was assistant U.S. ambassador to Mozambique and Brazil and was economic affairs coordinator at Afghanistan embassy in Kabul from 2010 and 2011.

Obama praised Chapman as a “dedicated public servant who has served with honor in all his postings. He is the kind of diplomat we need to face the important challenges of the day.”

Chapman will assume his Ecuador duties as soon as his nomination is approved by the U.S. Senate, which is expected.
