There are many ways to donate and volunteer in the earthquake relief effort

More than a week after the devastating earthquake, Ecuadorians have more and more ways to donate money and time to relief efforts. Below, are two lists of organizations who are delivering goods and services to the earthquake zone. Some also offer volunteer opportunities.

The first list was compiled by CuencaHighLife, the second by expat Sandra Kirkpatrick and posted on social media outlets. It is posted unedited.

One group of Ecuador expats that is not involved in fundraising, is suggesting that expats 65 and over not collect their IVA refunds, donating it instead to recovery effort.

Keep in mind that the campaigns listed focus primarily on efforts known to expats, many of them are organized and run by expats. There are many more worthy organizations and campaigns working locally and nationally, organized by Ecuadorians, and many of these focus on volunteer opportunities. At the outset of the disaster, we had 30 LifeStraw Community purifiers in stock in Quito and we have used initial funds raised to deploy all of those units this week. 20 of them left in a convoy on Tuesday with our team in trucks sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture. Several of the filters were installed in San Jacinto yesterday, after the team found a community that had not been receiving any other relief support and had no access to potable water. An additional 10 Community-sized filters are going out with Fundación Ceiba, a local NGO based in coastal Manabi. Their teams are being trained by our staff.

We also have other teams working to meet water and shelter needs as well. Edgerton and his team of 7 are working with Ecuador’s Ministry of Health doing what they can through local church partners and an emergency field hospital, but there are obstacles. The emergency field hospital will be set up on the grounds of Napoleon Davila Hospital in Chone

If any wants to donate money they are there for the long haul. I believe they will be helping with the rebuild as well. If anyone is in the area go and help.

9) Ecuador Cares – http://www.ecuadorcares.com/get-involved/. We sent our second shipment of food, water, baby formula, diapers, and other needed material to the community of Portoviejo on Sunday. On Monday we have another shipment destined for Manta and Santo Domingo. We need funds to keep the supplies flowing. Each shipment is accompanied by residents from the stricken community so that the supplies get to those who need it most.

This was a wonderful town that held in it some of the most original antique coastal style architecture and it has been completely devastated. Tent towns are along the road both north and south of the area and people are desperate for assistance. Some private relief groups have arrived and construction equipment has come in to begin clearing out the ruins to help stabilize the situation. We gave out the rations we had available but no matter what, you are left feeling like it isn’t enough. You naturally find yourself looking for one more thing in your pocket or in the car to give. I found a cough drop and managed to give it to a kid that would have been five or six. That smile pushes you further and leaves you wanting to get back and resupply as quickly as possible. Please continue to support. The relief effort is entering into the rebuild phase of necessity quickly and the country, the people need all the help they can get to make it successful.
