Music could replace honks for gas trucks

Under a proposed provision of Cuenca’s new noise ordinance, the private gas trucks that cruise residential neighborhoods would be required to use music instead of beeps to alert their customers.

For as long as anyone can remember, the trucks and crews that replace empty LP gas canisters with full ones, have used a series of staccato beeps to announce their presence. Also for as long as anyone can remember, residents have complained about the practice, especially when it happens just after daybreak.

The local association of gas dealers does not object to the change but has questions about the musical style and repertoire. Sandra Reyes, association spokeswoman, says the music would need to be loud enough for customers to hear. She says she would prefer Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries over Julio Iglesias Latin love tunes.

Besides toning down the gas trucks, the draft of the new noise ordinance would impose fines on households, businesses, and vehicles that produce excessive noise. Recurring false car and building alarms would also be subject to fines

The noise ordinance is up for second debate by the municipal council next week.
