Cuenca expats, as well holders of tourist, religious, business and work visas, must now travel to Azogues to deal with immigration issues. The Cuenca office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration ended all services to foreigners on Friday.

Ecuador is the favorite South American destination for North American expats.

Ecuadorian passport service remains in Cuenca.

Regional director for the ministry, Humberto Cordero, said the move to Azogues will improve efficiency by consolidating a number of ministry functions. “Azogues is where we have our data bases for all of southern Ecuador so the relocation should save time in handling a variety of transactions,” he said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration office in Azogues is located on the Cuenca – Azogues highway at Av. 16 de Abril. Azogues is 18 miles north of Cuenca.

Passport services for Ecuadorians will remain in the Cuenca immigration office on Av. Manuel Calle until the end of November, when it will relocate to the Central Bank on Calle Larga.
