Cuenca will soon have 100 wifi hotspots

Public internet connectivity is on the rise in Cuenca, according to Boris Piedra of the public utility company ETAPA. “We will have 100 wifi hotspots by the end of April,” he says. “This was a goal we set two years ago we are proud to say we will achieve it.”

There are currently 94 public internet access points in Cuenca, Piedra says, most of them in public parks and plazas. Of these, 23 are in suburban parishes. “Our goal is to cover all the urban and rural parishes of the municipality,” he said.

In addition to expanding the number of hotspots, Piedra says that work is underway to improve signal strength and connection speeds in existing locations. Fiber optic cable is being installed in several parks in the city, replacing older cable.

Wifi access is available 24 hours a day in most locations although it is limited to 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. in others.
