The judges hearing the Odebrecht corruption trial said Friday that they would announce their verdicts on eight defendants, including Vice President Jorge Glas, next Wednesday.

Attorney General Carlos Baca

During closing arguments Friday, Attorney General Carlos Baca asked for the maximum penalty of six years in prison for Glas on the charge of illicit association. He also asked for reduced sentences for three of the accused and that one defendant, Diego Cabrera, be declared innocent.

In a press conference following the final hearing, Baca praised the work of his prosecutors, singling out Diana Salazar, who heads his office’s anti-corruption unit. “Her work in the case has been outstanding and I feel confident that it will result in justice for the accused,” he said.

Criminal court judges Édgar Flores, Sylvia Sánchez and Richard Villagómez closed the trial Friday afternoon, saying they will reconvene Wednesday at 4 p.m. to announce their verdicts.
