Cuenca’s tram 14 tram units will begin live testing today that will continue to February 23. The trains will run without passengers from the rail yard at Avs. Unidad Nacional and Mexico to the Feria Libre market on Av. Las Americas.

The tests, conducted by the city transportation office (EMOV) and the French construction contractor ACTN, include integrity tests of the rails and the overhead electrical system, said Jaime Guzmán, tram project director for the city. In addition, safety protocols will be evaluated during the testing period.

He added that transit police will be positioned along the rail line to direct traffic when the tram is operating.

By May, the city and ACTN plan to extend the test area through the historic district to Av. España, in the vicinity of the airport and bus station. “We will expand the tests as we complete the missing construction links,” said Guzmán, who added that construction remains on schedule.
