Solo Aging in Ecuador: What We’ve Learned Together
Since our live May 14 & 15 gatherings, rich conversations have been unfolding behind the scenes. I wanted to share a quick update with the broader community about what emerged from Solo Aging Day and where our reflections are taking us.
Through two heartfelt conversations — one in person and one online — and continued online exchanges, expats came together to explore what it means to age solo in Ecuador. The desire for deeper connection, practical planning, and honest dialogue was clear.
💬 Social Circles & Chosen Family
Many of us are seeking more intentional friendships and peer support. The question “Who will be there for me?” is a powerful one.
🏥 Medical Advocacy
Healthcare here is different from the U.S. Without nearby family, it’s essential to have someone legally empowered to speak for you in a crisis.
🏘️ Housing & Supportive Living
There’s growing interest in co-living, shared rentals, or community property where we can age together—not alone.
⚖️ Legal Planning in Ecuador
Guest attorney Sabrina Candela shared essential insights:
• Only two legal documents matter: a Power of Attorney and a Will (if you own local assets)
• U.S. living wills aren’t legally valid here, even with affidavits
This is especially relevant for those 55+ without local family or expected care from adult children.
The conversation is evolving into next steps shaped by our shared ideas and needs. Send a message to Join the Convo!
With warmth and gratitude,
