A Taste of Ecuadorian Tradition, Baked with Love by the Grandmothers of D’Ellas Bakery

10406 views

Every year, as November 2nd approaches, families across Ecuador gather around a warm pot of colada morada. It’s a thick, spiced purple drink made with black corn, blackberries, pineapple and fragrant herbs. Next to it they serve guaguas de pan, sweet bread shaped like little babies. It is how Ecuadorians honor and remember the loved ones who came before them.

This year, the women of D’Ellas Bakery are making this tradition by hand, just as their mothers and grandmothers taught them. Each guagua is shaped and decorated with care, and each pot of colada is simmered slowly with recipes passed down through generations.

When you order, you’re doing more than enjoying a beloved Ecuadorian tradition. You’re helping sustain dignified jobs for women in Cuenca, and every purchase supports the work of Hearts of Gold Foundation.

Share it with your family, bring it to your Ecuadorian friends and neighbors, or try it for the first time. We’d love for you to be part of this tradition with us.
