Merry Capac Raymi and Happy Holidays!
It’s that special time of year again! Time to pause, embrace the shifting seasons, and reflect on our journey—how we treat one another and what truly matters.
In the North, the December solstice brings winter’s holiday festivities, symbolizing a ‘return to light,’ the renewal of “the Son” (or Sun), and the hopeful turning of the calendar into a fresh year. Here in the Andes, the December solstice shines as Capac Raymi, a celebration of abundance, growth, and the longest days of the year.
Capac Raymi, a Quechua term meaning “Celebrating the Leader” (Raymi = celebration + Capac = leader), is rooted in traditions where youth were inaugurated into community roles. It was a rite of passage, marking transitions into new life chapters.
Deeply tied to the agricultural calendar, Capac Raymi honors the period when water is abundant, the sun is favorable, and growth flourishes. Seeds burst through the soil, and it’s time to choose what to nurture and clear away what no longer serves. This reflects the energy of foresight and care—a reminder to cultivate what matters most in life.
As we honor Capac Raymi in the Andes and winter’s holidays in the North, may we see the shared themes of light, growth, and renewal connecting us across hemispheres.
Wishing you a Merry Capac Raymi and Happy Holidays!
