Dental implants in Cuenca: What every expat should know before choosing a dental clinic

For many of us who have made Cuenca our home, dental care is one of the pleasant surprises of life in Ecuador. Treatments that would cost a small fortune in the United States or Canada are available here for a fraction of the price, often with excellent results. However, lower prices also mean a flood of options — and not all are equal. As a maxillofacial surgeon who has practiced in this city for years, I’d like to offer an honest guide to help you make the best choice, whether or not you become my patient.

First, identify who is providing your treatment.
In Ecuador, as in most countries, a general dentist and a specialist are not the same. A general dentist handles cleanings, fillings, and routine dental care. A maxillofacial surgeon, on the other hand, has completed several years of additional hospital training in surgery involving the mouth, jaw, and face. This distinction is important when it comes to dental implants, which involve a surgical procedure to place a titanium root into your jawbone. Be sure to ask directly who will perform the surgery and what their specialty is. You have every right to know.

Second, ask which implant brand they use.
Many patients overlook this question, yet it may be the most important one to ask. There are excellent implant systems available worldwide, as well as inexpensive generic copies. The difference is rarely noticeable on the day of surgery — it becomes apparent years later, especially if adjustments or repairs are needed. At our clinic, we use Straumann®, a Swiss system regarded as the gold standard and widely used in the United States. Just as importantly, we provide every patient with the official Straumann Implant Passport, which records the exact implant placed in your mouth. This ensures that if you return to the US or travel elsewhere, any dentist can identify and service your implant. In contrast, a generic implant without documentation may leave a future dentist guessing — and you paying the price.

Third, request a written treatment plan that includes fixed prices.
A reputable clinic will examine you, take a panoramic X-ray, and provide a written treatment plan that clearly outlines both your needs and the total cost—before any work begins. Be cautious of prices that seem unusually low and of treatment plans that become more expensive after you start. At FaceDent, our comprehensive evaluation costs $30, which is credited toward your treatment, and the price you receive in your plan is exactly what you will pay.

Four, inquire about warranty and follow-up.
High-Quality Implant Care is a lasting commitment.

Quality implant treatment is a long-term partnership, not just a single visit. Be sure to ask whether the implant comes with a written warranty and if follow-up appointments are included. We offer a five-year written warranty and one full year of follow-up care, because we stand behind every implant we place.

Fifth, and this concerns both comfort and safety — are you able to communicate?
Making Dental Decisions: Dental decisions are personal. You should be able to discuss your options, concerns, and budget clearly, in your own language. At our clinic, you speak directly with your surgeon in fluent English—not through a translator and not with a salesperson. That conversation is where quality treatment begins.

A word about value versus price.
Cuenca’s dental market is among the most competitive in the region, which ultimately benefits patients. However, the cheapest option is not always the most cost-effective. An implant placed without proper planning, or a generic component that fails, becomes expensive when it needs to be redone. The true value is in getting it right the first time: choosing the right specialist, using quality materials, and having an honest treatment plan. When done correctly, a dental implant can last for decades. When done poorly, it can end up costing you much more than you initially saved.

What this matters here and now.
We are fortunate in Cuenca to have skilled professionals and fair prices. My hope is that you choose with the same care you would apply to any important medical decision back home. Ask the questions above of any clinic you visit. A good clinic will welcome them.

If you’d like to talk through your own situation, our team is happy to help — in English, with no obligation. You can reach us on WhatsApp at +593 96 147 7783, or visit clinicafacedent.com. We have two locations in Cuenca, both offering free parking and private security, and we would be glad to give you an honest opinion about your options.

Your smile — and your ability to eat, speak and laugh with confidence — deserved to be protected.
