How Many Implants Are Needed for a Full Mouth? (Hint: It’s Not 28)

Dec 5, 2025

If you are missing all your teeth, or have been told you need all your remaining teeth extracted, your first thought might be overwhelming: “Do I need 28 or 32 implants?”

Let’s put that fear to rest. It is a common misconception that you need one implant for every missing tooth.

Thanks to modern dental techniques, a full-mouth restoration does not mean a full mouth of implants. Instead, specialists use a “full arch” approach, where just a few strategically placed implants can support an entire, permanent bridge of 12 to 14 teeth. This reduces surgical time, cost, and recovery.

Here are the most common options for a full-mouth restoration.

  1. All-on-4®

This is the most well-known and revolutionary solution. It uses just four specialized implants per jaw to support a full, permanent, non-removable arch of teeth. The two back implants are placed at an angle, which often makes it possible to perform the procedure without the need for bone grafts, even for patients who have experienced bone loss.

  1. All-on-6 or All-on-8

This is a similar concept to All-on-4, but it uses six or eight implants per arch. This option is often used for patients who have a very strong jawbone or a heavy bite, as it provides extra stability and a more even distribution of pressure.

  1. Implant-Supported Dentures

This is a “snap-in” option. It uses two to six implants to anchor a denture. It is not a permanent, fixed bridge like All-on-4, but it is far more stable and comfortable than traditional dentures that just rest on the gums.

So, How Many Can Be Placed at Once?

For full-arch solutions like All-on-4 or All-on-6, the entire procedure is typically done in a single surgical appointment. The oral surgeon will place all 4 (or 6) implants at once. In many cases, a temporary, fixed prosthesis can be attached that same day, allowing you to leave the clinic with a beautiful, functional smile immediately.

You don’t need 28 implants. You just need one expert team to design the right solution for you.
