Over his seven-day visit, Moreno will meet United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, President Alexander Van der Bellen of Austria, and President Tabaré Vázquez of Uruguay.

“The president will have a busy schedule this week with the focus on building strong bilateral relationships, encouraging trade and foreign investment, and offering support to the large Ecuadorian migrant population in the northeastern U.S.,” says Foreign Minister Maria Fernanda Espinosa.

In his address to the UN General Assembly, Moreno will promote sustainable development, poverty eradication and environmental protection, according to Espinosa. “He will highlight the progress that Ecuador has made in all of these areas over the past decade,” she said.

Moreno, who served as UN Special Envoy for the Rights of Disabled Persons from 2013 to 2016, will also participate in special forums on climate change and protection of the Amazon basin.

Other scheduled activities on Moreno’s schedule include meetings with the Council of the Americas to promote Ecuadorian trade and investment and attendance at the 41th Ministerial Meeting of the G-77 plus China.

In addition to private meetings with migrants, Espinosa says that he may meet with U.S. officials during the trip.
