Festival de la Lira – The awards ceremony for this poetry festival will be el miércoles13/11.

Concierto – French pianist Maxime Zecchini will perform with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Cuenca este jueves a las 20:00 in the teatro Carlos Cueva Tamariz and el viernes a las 20:00 in the Pumapungo. The program will include works by Mozart, Verdi, Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, Ravel, Bertsein y Legrand. Free.

Chordeleg – The canton is celebrating 2 years as a Ciudad Creativa – a UN designation. Activities will include la Ruta Teatralizada (Theatrical Route) el 30/10 a las 15:00 and the first National Meeting of Ecuadorian National Dance el domingo, 3/11 a las 10:00.

Cemetery tour – The Ruta de Leyendas will take place in the cementerio patrimonial el próximo 30/10 a las 18:00 and a las 20:00. Guides representing various inhabitants of the cemetery will narrate the tour and explain the Día de los Difuntos which is on 2/11. Sign up on the social media pages of the Colectivo Barojo, the departamento de Turismo y Cultura de la Arquidiócis de Cuenca, and Empresa Municipal de Servicios de Cementerios (EMUCE) or call 283 4636.

Otras cosas –

Titular – 80% de los buses ha sido renovado (80% of buses have been renovated) – The Board of the Transportation Chamber is sure the whole 475 vehicle fleet will be replaced by marzo, 2020 according to the municipal ordinance approved in 2014. The 20% remaining are the blue buses and are in the process of being replaced. The fleet price of a bus is $125,000 depending on the brand, and the owners are financing the purchases with 5-7 year loans. The useful life of a bus used to be 15-20 years, but the situation now is different. At 6 years, after the loan is paid off, the owner has one year to use the bus and then replace it. A bus in good condition has a market in other areas of the country. <Kind of like hand-me-down clothes.>

Proyecto de Ordenanza para la Protección de Personas con Discapacidad – The Cantonal Council held a 5th debate on an ordinance that would guarantee accessibility by disabled people to public and private spaces.

Día del Bombero – Firefighter Day was celebrated today with a parade from San Blas to San Sebastián. About 350 volunteer fighters marched with antorchas (torches – your word for the day). At least 11 vehicles were also in the parade.

Tranvía – The damage to the Tranvía system during the protests was about $50,000 and will be covered by insurance. Repairs will take about a month. The final delivery of the project to the city is expected around the end of the year. Once the city becomes the owner of the trains, lines and energy, testing of the system will resume. <I hope all the drivers will have their licenses by then, too.>

Incident on bus – An informal vendor reacted violently when he was prevented from getting on a #16 bus at Héroes de Verdeloma y Cordero el lunes a las 19:00. He threw something against the window, breaking it. He was removed from the site, but not detained. A bus line owner asked for better security on buses.

Refinery – There were 6 entities that expressed interest in building a new coastal refinery capable of refining 300,000 barrels of oil per day. The project would consist of designing, constructing and operating the refinery. The government will take 30 days to evaluate the responses.
