Cuenca has suspended city-sponsored foundation holiday events for Saturday and Sunday in honor of three Ecuadorian journalists murdered by drug traffickers in southern Colombia. The cancellations follow the announcement by President Lenin Moreno of a four-day mourning period for the victims.

Holiday events sponsored by the city have been cancelled for Saturday and Sunday.

“Today, we want to join in the exercise of national unity following the tragic deaths of three Ecuadorians at the hands of a drug cartel. As a show of respect, we are cancelling holiday events promoted by the municipality,” read a statement issued by the city.

There is one exception to the cancellations, according to Vice Mayor Ruth Caldas. “The Saturday concert by Jorge Celedón in Parque de la Madre will continue as planned.”

The suspension of activities applies only to events and fairs sponsored by the city. Most crafts fairs and some events will continue as planned, Caldas said.

Among the Saturday events cancelled are the National Music Gala; the Tropical Music Concert in Homage to Cuenca at Alejandro Serrano Aguilar stadium; and Cuenca Adopta 2018.
