Upcoming and ongoing agenda events –

Festival de Danza – Ecuador will be the location for the Primer Festival Internacional de Danza en Pareja (1st International Couples Dance Festival) from 18-21/10. On el viernes, 20/10, there will be a gala with the dancers from Perú at he El Prohibido Centro Cultural. The event will include training workshops. Cost: $3.00.

Photo exhibit – The Association of Employees and Workers at the U. of Cuenca have a photo exhibit about the 150 years of the university in the Sala de Artistas Jóvenes in the Museo Pumapungo.

Rally Cinematográfico – El domingo is the last day to submit a proposal for this film competition which is open to university students and recent graduates from 2015 to date. 6 teams will be selected to film a fiction audiovisual production in 3 days. Filming will be done in El Vecino, San Blas, San Sebastián, Calle Larga, parque De La Madre, Las Herrerías, Ricaurte, Terminal Terrestre y Avenida Loja. Anniversary – The congregation, Heraldos del Evangelio – Caballeros de la Virgen (Heralds of the Gospel – Knights of the Virgin) will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the appearance of the Virgen de Fátima to 3 shepherds in Portugal. Activities will be in the iglesia de Corazón de Jesús (Gran Colombia y Abraham Sarmiento).

Titular – Empresarios, escépticos; Gobierno, por más dinero (Businessmen, skeptics; Government, for more money) – The Government’s economic plan was summarized and $1,700 million in income is anticipated. <Of particular concern to gringos>, the exit tax on money seems to be staying, at least for another year, but gas, gasoline, diesel, electricity and IVA will not go up. Mining – Protected zones are at risk of being mining concessions. Some 2,309.26 hectares that Cuenca bought to protect water sources and ecosystems is on the Ministerio de Minería list as available for mining exploration.

Bridge sunk – The pedestrian and bicycle draw bridge that connects Guayaquil with Santay island was hit by a boat causing a partial collapse. There were no injuries, but a group of people was stuck on the bridge and another on the island until they were rescued. <I wonder if the pilot was drunk and missed the raised part of the bridge. <“This looks like the right section …. oh, s**t – it’s not going up.” Choque!>

Law to Prevent and Eradicate Gender Violence Against Women – The law is generating conflict over the issues of “ideología de género” (gender ideology); Article 6 which deals with self determination of one’s sex, gender identity and sexual orientation; and Article 7 which deals with diversity. Catholic church and evangelical Christian organizations are planning a march mañana a las 8:00 starting from San Blas.

Food for Life (Alimentos para la Vida) – This non-profit group founded in 1974, is giving out free hot food Saturday and Sunday a las 17:00 in the parque De La Madre to anyone who comes as a way to bring attention to their organization which provides food in disasters, schools, hospitals, jails and where ever there is a need. <Why are they here? Feria – The 3d Tourist, Crafts, and Gastronomic Fair and the 1st Salón of Amazonian Art opened Saturday at the Portal Artesanal. It will run through domingo from 10-20:00 with all sorts of food such as maitos, ayampacos, mayones, and more. (I have no idea what these things are, but they didn’t mention chontacuros.> 46 cantons from the Amazon and the Galápagos, as well as Baños and Penipe cantons are participating.
