Cuenca foundation celebration being planned

Cuenca’s foundation festival next month will include more than 100 activities, organizers say. Proposals for events are being accepted until Friday, March 31.

Get ready to party!

The Committee for Festivities says the foundation festival, scheduled for April 8 to 12, will include parades, sporting events, festivals, concerts, crafts and food fairs, and art exhibitions. The official 460th anniversary of Cuenca’s founding by the Spanish is April 12.

The festivities committee says it will publish an agenda once all events are approved.

Cuenca’s foundation celebration has traditionally been the “poor sister” to the larger independence celebration in early November. “We celebrate when the Spanish founded the city and then we celebrate again when we kicked them out,” says one member of the festivities committee, adding, “We like to party.”
