Cuenca goes for its fourth straight win in South America championship competition

After winning all three games in the group stage, Deportivo Cuenca women’s football team takes on Paraguay’s Cerro Porteño tonight in Copa Libertadores de América competition tonight in Quito.

“We are playing very balanced but very aggressive football and I am confident of our chances to advance,” says Cuenca coach Wendy Villón. “Our upset Thursday of Ferroviaria gives us the inspiration to continue the quest.”

Cuenca defeated Brazil’s Ferroviaria, considered the tournament favorite, Thursday night 2-1. Earlier last week, the Lionnes defeated the Caracas Estudiantes 3-1 and Mundo Futuro of Bolivia 5-1.

Cuenca is led by Guatemalan-born Madelin Riera who scored four goals in group competition, including the winner against Ferroviaria. Riera scored a record 44 goals during the regular season.
