Cuenca’s ‘sound of music’ needs community support

Apr 28, 2025 | 0 comments

I regularly commute from a tiny village overlooking the Paute River to Cuenca, enjoying the moment when it’s time to climb aboard the tranvía for the easy trip from the bus terminal to El Centro or beyond. The trip is quiet, takes but a moment, and is a great example of what is possible when creative people collaborate.

It is invigorating to hear the profusion of blossoming music venues popping up in El Centro lately, which encourage new opportunities and result in the cross-pollination of musical styles among musicians. More bands are forming and performing live music shows than ever before, inspiring many musicians to play in multiple bands, which allows their diverse interpretations of various genres to influence the music of everyone.

Karen Kennedy left “the boards of Broadway” over 35 years ago when she married and moved to Cuenca, the birthplace of her husband. A successful singing career that began at a young age allowed her to tour Europe, performing in numerous venues and countries, so developing creative ways to engage with the arts community in Cuenca came naturally. She has been a significant influence ever since.

When I asked Karen to provide an early lesson on living here, she replied, “Professional musicians are often asked — perhaps a little too often — to donate their time to support a cause. I know that many causes are worthy, and I volunteer regularly; however, agreeing to every request is unreasonable. That is why collaboration and a shared vision of responsibility are so important. New musicians need exposure; they can be invited too.” She explained to me that we need to view ourselves as fellow collaborators responsible for serving the needs of a larger public that benefits from the strength that music provides.

“We need to embrace emerging styles, cultural influences, and inclusive media innovations. That’s why I enjoy singing on the train. I want to do my part and encourage others, especially those musicians in the Cuencano community, to join us,” she concluded.

The city will again call on the community of musicians in Cuenca for their help, and I expect many will answer the call to lend their voice to serve the public good. It is cause for pride… and concern.

Artists have long struggled to find their place in the development of the city’s reputation and tone. They are too often overlooked in terms of financial support or aid in establishing suitable venues to perform and showcase their work.

We need to do our part to do what we can.

The next time you hear of a rollicking good band playing at a local pub or an enticing concert in a church or auditorium, drop in, give it a listen, and leave a donation; you will be well rewarded.

And don’t neglect to leave a tip for your server.

Supporting local music is simple. It’s as easy as humming along to the soothing rhythm of the tranvia’s rails while chatting with fellow passengers and taking in the sights and sounds of a city that’s easy to love and call home.
