Ecuador celebrates a goal in game against Venezuela.

Ecuador kept itself in contention for a spot in World Cup 2018 competition on Tuesday, defeating Venezuela 3-0 in Quito.

Following a sluggish first half, Ecuador played aggressive offense in the second, recording goals by Arturo Mina, Miller Bolaños, and Enner Valencia.

“We gained the spark in the second period and played the type of game we are capable of,” said Ecuador coach Gustavo Quinteros. “If can maintain that level of intensity in next year’s qualifiers, we will earn our way to the Moscow World Cup.”

The South American football qualifiers resume in March 23, 2017 when Ecuador visits Paraguay.
